U.S. Accelerates Development of Cutting-Edge Energy Weapons
The U.S. Department of Defense is ramping up its investment, funneling approximately $1 billion annually into the development of directed-energy weapons designed to counter emerging threats such as drones and missiles. This substantial effort has been revealed through findings from the Congressional Research Service.
The Arsenal: Directed-energy weapons primarily come in two distinct forms:
1. High-Energy Lasers (HEL): These devices concentrate beams of energy to inflict damage on targets by cutting, blinding, or generating intense heat.
2. High-Power Microwaves (HPM): Emitting waves of energy, HPMs disrupt or damage electronic components crucial for the operation of various systems.
Facing Challenges: High-Energy Lasers have the advantage of cutting through a wide range of materials, yet they are vulnerable to atmospheric conditions like fog or wind. On the other hand, High-Power Microwaves can swiftly affect electronic systems, but their effectiveness diminishes with distance.
Real-World Utility: All branches of the U.S. military are integrating directed-energy systems into their arsenal. Recent trials have included a joint initiative between the Army and the Pentagon to evaluate weapons capable of neutralizing drones. The Navy has also achieved a milestone with the successful testing of a high-energy laser aboard the USS Portland.
The Long Game: Bridging the gap between technological development and practical deployment, often referred to as the “valley of death,” remains a considerable challenge. Nonetheless, military leaders emphasize the urgency of expediting the implementation of these cutting-edge systems.
