Two-thirds of colleges and universities in the United States enforce a mandatory Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) curriculum for graduation, a recent report by Speech First, a First Amendment advocacy group, reveals.
According to the report titled “No Graduation Without Indoctrination: The DEI Course Mandate,” which examined 248 institutions across the nation, 67% impose DEI-themed courses as a prerequisite for graduation, while only 33% do not. This imposition underscores a concerning trend within academia.
Of the schools imposing DEI mandates, 59% are publicly funded institutions, raising questions about the use of taxpayer dollars to enforce ideological agendas. Meanwhile, 41% are private institutions, indicating a widespread adoption of DEI initiatives across various educational sectors.
While not all courses explicitly label themselves as DEI-focused, the report highlights the prevalence of certain key terms indicative of such content. Terms like equity, social justice, and critical race theory serve as markers for courses with DEI themes, suggesting a pervasive influence of these ideologies within academic curricula.
Speech First Executive Director Cherise Trump (no relation to Donald Trump) condemns these mandates, calling for a unified effort to abolish DEI graduation requirements. She emphasizes the importance of preserving free speech and intellectual diversity within educational institutions, urging legislators, educators, students, and parents to join the cause.
“Our constitutional republic, designed to safeguard democracy, is founded upon the principles of free speech and academic freedom,” asserts Trump. “By standing together, we can create an environment where students are empowered to engage in open discourse, free from ideological coercion.”
Critics argue that DEI mandates undermine academic freedom by imposing a singular ideological framework on students, stifling dissenting viewpoints, and inhibiting intellectual inquiry. They contend that education should prioritize the pursuit of knowledge and critical thinking over ideological conformity.
In assessing the methodology of the report, Speech First ensured equal representation of schools by employing multiple criteria, including Spring 2023 NCAA Division 1 Conference Membership, US News Ranking 2023 of Best National Universities, Endowment Over $1 Billion, and Top 100 of Undergrad Enrollment.
As debates surrounding DEI mandates continue to unfold, advocates for constitutional principles and academic freedom remain steadfast in their commitment to challenging ideological indoctrination within higher education. The preservation of intellectual diversity and free expression stands as a cornerstone of our democratic society, warranting vigilant protection against encroachments on these fundamental rights.

In a nation built upon the principles of “We the People” within our Constitutional Republic, the acknowledgment and understanding of our diverse population are imperative. As a proponent of these foundational ideals, I harbor no qualms about individuals learning about diversity. Indeed, in a world where we aspire to transcend labels and racial divides, fostering a culture of mutual understanding and respect is a laudable goal.
However, it is disheartening to observe that many of these DEI programs, rather than promoting tolerance and equality, inadvertently perpetuate divisions and hinder progress. Instead of fostering genuine dialogue and empathy, they often breed resentment and discord. Rather than advancing us toward a future of unity and shared prosperity, they risk entrenching us further in the quagmire of identity politics.
As believers in the promise of our Constitutional Republic, we must remain vigilant in safeguarding the principles of liberty, equality, and justice for all. This entails not only challenging the imposition of ideological mandates but also advocating for educational initiatives that truly promote understanding and bridge divides.
Ultimately, our collective aspiration should be a society where individuals are judged not by the color of their skin or any other superficial characteristic, but by the content of their character. It is incumbent upon us, as stewards of liberty and champions of democracy, to strive tirelessly toward this noble ideal, ensuring that the pursuit of diversity does not become a hindrance to the realization of our shared humanity.
