Who Are the Real “No Kings”… and Who’s Been Acting Like One?
I remember watching people cheer in the streets, not in celebration of freedom, but in celebration of control.
Stay home.
Close your business.
Don’t go to church.
Don’t question it.
And if you did question it? You weren’t just wrong. You were dangerous.
That’s where this story really begins.
The Moment Emergency Power Became Everyday Power
We were told it was temporary.
“Just two weeks.”
“Just to flatten the curve.”
But those weeks turned into months… and then into a mindset.
Governors didn’t debate. They declared.
Rules didn’t pass through legislatures. They came down like orders.
Small businesses were shut down overnight. Families were told who they could visit. Churches were labeled non-essential.
And the question nobody asked loudly enough was this:
When does an emergency stop being an emergency… and start becoming authority?
Obey First, Question Never
Then came the next phase.
You couldn’t just live your life. You had to prove compliance.
Want to keep your job?
Take the shot.
Want to travel?
Show your papers.
Want to speak out?
Be careful what you say.
Because suddenly, speech itself became a problem.
Posts disappeared.
Accounts were suspended.
Voices were buried under the label of “misinformation.”
And it wasn’t just random moderation. There were growing concerns about government officials leaning on tech companies to control what people could say, see, and share.
When Protests Depend on Who You Are
Now here’s where people really started noticing the difference.
Because not all protests were treated the same.
Across the country, we saw unrest that turned into real damage. Businesses burned. Streets blocked. Entire areas were taken over and labeled “autonomous.”
And the response?
Mixed messaging.
Justifications.
In some cases, even support.
But then came January 6.
And suddenly, the tone changed completely.
Now it was:
Full force.
Full prosecution.
Full outrage.
Violence and lawbreaking should be condemned across the board.
But critics continue to ask:
Why does accountability seem absolute in one direction… and flexible in another?
The Rise of the Untouchable Bureaucracy
And while all of this was happening, something else quietly expanded.
Agencies.
Not elected leaders. Not lawmakers.
Agencies.
Rules about housing.
Rules about work.
Rules about health.
Decisions affecting millions, often coming from people the public never voted for.
And when challenged?
Sometimes the courts stepped in.
Which raises the question:
Would these powers have stopped… if no one pushed back?

Let’s stop pretending this is just about slogans.
“No Kings” sounds powerful. It sounds patriotic. It sounds like something every American should stand behind.
But words are cheap.
Because if you look at what’s actually happened, not what’s been said, a different picture starts to emerge.
A picture where power doesn’t shrink… it expands.
Where authority doesn’t get questioned… it gets normalized.
Where rules aren’t applied equally… they’re applied strategically.
That’s not a republic mindset.
That’s a control mindset.
And here’s the part nobody wants to say out loud:
You don’t need a king when you have a system that can control speech, movement, employment, and information all at once.
You don’t need a crown when power flows through executive orders, unelected agencies, and backchannel pressure on private companies.
You don’t need a throne when the rules can change overnight… and half the country is expected to just comply.
That’s the uncomfortable truth.
Because this isn’t about left versus right.
This is about whether Americans still recognize when power crosses the line.
When people were told they couldn’t open their businesses, that wasn’t just policy. That was control.
When speech was labeled dangerous and removed, that wasn’t just moderation. That was influence.
When protests were treated differently depending on who was involved, that wasn’t just politics. That was selective enforcement.
And when all of that gets defended under the banner of “safety” or “necessity,” something deeper is happening.
Something that history has warned about again and again.
Power doesn’t usually arrive with a crown and a declaration.
It arrives quietly.
It expands gradually.
And it stays because people get used to it.
So the real question isn’t whether we have kings.
The real question is this:
Are we allowing a system to grow that no longer needs one?
Because in a true Constitutional Republic, power is limited, temporary, and accountable.
Not flexible.
Not selective.
Not permanent.
And if we start accepting those things…
Then the slogan isn’t the problem.
The contradiction is.
Because you can’t chant “No Kings” while defending actions that look exactly like concentrated power.
You can’t claim liberty while accepting control.
And you can’t preserve a republic… if you stop questioning authority.
That’s the line.
And once it’s crossed, history shows, it’s not easy to go back.
