Why the GOP Must Refocus to Save the Republic

Back in 2023, Raw Story, published an article about me, Peter Boykin, founder of Gays for Trump and a Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina.

At that time, I was one of the first openly gay Republicans to run for that office in my state, possibly even the first in the entire party to do so. Yet despite the so-called “diversity” movement sweeping through politics, the GOP barely acknowledged it.

It is strange, isn’t it? When Mark Robinson became North Carolina’s first Black Republican Lieutenant Governor, the party celebrated loudly, and rightfully so. Representation matters. I honor that historic achievement because breaking barriers should always be recognized.

Unfortunately, what came after that moment proved something deeper.
Robinson’s term reminded us that being “the first” is not enough if you do not represent with integrity. A title without principle is just a headline. Representation loses its meaning when the person holding office forgets who they serve.

That is not an attack; it is a warning. The same danger applies to all of us. When any leader, of any background, turns representation into personal ambition, they stop speaking for the people and start speaking for themselves.

We must never let one bad example define the whole. One bad representative should not make us give up on leadership altogether. One bad egg should not spoil the bunch.

The Republican Party claims to be the party of freedom and individual merit, yet when that freedom does not fit a familiar mold, it becomes inconvenient.

I did not run to be the “gay candidate.” I ran to represent We the People. But ignoring my existence because it does not fit a narrative is no better than the left’s version of censorship. Truth does not vanish just because it makes someone uncomfortable.

The Real Division: Focus vs. Distraction

When Raw Story profiled me, they tried to make my support for Donald Trump sound like a contradiction, as if being gay and conservative could not coexist. What they missed was the point. Trump represents something deeper than partisanship. He represents focus.

Meanwhile, the GOP has lost its own.

The party of Lincoln, Reagan, and Trump, the party that once freed slaves, stood for civil rights, and built the backbone of American industry, has allowed itself to be consumed by distractions.

Every day it is a new fight over words, bathrooms, or drag shows, while real issues like border security, inflation, education, keeping the government from a shutdown, and government corruption are left to rot.

As I said before,

“It’s all ‘tranny on a canny!’ while we ignore the border, the debt ceiling, and the chaos in our justice system.”

That line hit people because it was true. The Republican Party has become a stage for performance politics instead of practical governance. Everyone wants to trend, but no one wants to lead.

We have turned our movement into a circular firing squad, shouting “RINO” at anyone who does not echo our outrage.

But a house divided cannot govern, and a party obsessed with fighting itself cannot defend a Republic.

A Lesson from Bewitched: Freedom in Disguise

Let’s rewind to something that predates hashtags and headlines, a piece of pop culture that carried real meaning under its laugh track.

Three years before her death, Elizabeth Montgomery, the star of Bewitched, revealed that the show was not just about magic. It was about repression.

Think about it. Samantha, the witch, had to hide who she truly was to live among humans. She had to suppress her natural gifts to fit into society.

In the 1960s, being gay was criminalized. People lost jobs, homes, and even their lives for being honest about who they were. So “being a witch” was more than fantasy; it was code for living under judgment.

Montgomery’s castmates, Dick Sargent, Paul Lynde, Agnes Moorehead, and Maurice Evans, were all part of that unspoken world. When the AIDS crisis hit decades later, Montgomery did not stay silent. She marched, she donated, and she fought for those who were dying while politicians and networks stayed quiet.

Long before “ally” became a buzzword, she lived it. That is what the Republican Party needs now, not performative outrage, but authentic courage.

The Endless Coming Out

Being gay is not a one-time event. You do not “come out” once and check it off like a to-do list.

I come out constantly. To my doctor. To my barber. To a coworker. To a stranger who assumes.

Each time, there is that pause, that mental calculation. Do I correct them, or just let it slide? Do I risk making this moment awkward for telling the truth?

Straight people do not live like that. They do not have to. Their existence is the default setting. They walk through life pre-approved.

So, when I see comments online like

“Who the hell comes out to their barber? Just get your haircut,”

or

“I came out once in 2006 and moved on,”

it does not read as strength. It reads as fatigue disguised as pride.

Pretending visibility does not matter is how we erase ourselves. Silence may be safe, but it is not freedom.

Being out is not attention-seeking. It is living openly in a world that once criminalized your honesty.

Victimhood vs. Visibility

Some accuse the LGBTQ community of thriving on victimhood. They say the left uses gay and trans people as political pawns the way they once exploited Black voters in the 1960s.

There is truth there, but not where they think.

Yes, the left manipulates identity politics for power. But the solution is not denial; it is authenticity.

You cannot reject your own identity just to spite the other side. You can be conservative and gay without being anyone’s pawn.

That is why I built Gays for Trump. Not as a protest. Not as a “special interest.” But as a home for people like me who believe what Peter Thiel declared in 2016 at the Republican National Committee Meeting:

“I am proud to be gay. I am proud to be a Republican. But most of all, I am proud to be an American.”

The Stockholm Syndrome of Gay Conservatism

Too many gay conservatives have become comfortable in silence. They confuse invisibility for respect.

I hear it constantly in my own groups.

“I don’t care about marriage.”

“I don’t tell anyone I’m gay.”

“I just live a normal life.”

That is not liberation. That is acclimation to fear.

I call it the Stockholm syndrome of gay conservatism, where you begin to identify with the very ideology that once oppressed you, just to feel safe within it.

Some of our own, like Gays Against Groomers, think they are fighting for children. But in practice, they have become enforcers of shame, turning legitimate concern about protecting minors into a full-blown attack on our own community.

Let’s be clear. Pedophiles are criminals, not gay people.

Equating gay existence with perversion is the same lie that once drove us into hiding.

If we do not challenge that narrative, we are feeding the same prejudice we claim to oppose.

The Culture of Existence, Not Excess

Being gay is not a performance. It is a reality, just like being straight or Black or conservative.

And yes, I compare it to being Black because the parallel is there. You do not stop being Black when you walk into a room, and you do not stop being gay because you stop talking about it.

Both identities carry cultural weight, stories, struggles, and stereotypes that you cannot just discard when they are inconvenient.

When the Republican Party treats inclusion as “woke” or diversity as “leftist,” it betrays its own origin story. This is the party that freed slaves, that defended individual liberty, that once celebrated courage in all its forms.

We have let that legacy be replaced with fear of labels.

Reclaiming the Soul of the Republican Party

We can protect children without demonizing adults.
We can defend faith without forcing it on others.
We can cherish traditional values without criminalizing personal freedom.

If the GOP wants to win the future, it has to start embracing the present.

And that begins with how we vote:

“Remember when you vote, vote for the BEST person to represent YOU, and the BETTER person. Not because they are one party or the other, or if they raised the most money. WE THE PEOPLE demand BETTER!!”

Voting is not about party loyalty. It is about personal responsibility, choosing leaders who serve the Constitution, not their egos.

Are Republicans Losing the War by Fighting the Wrong Battles?

The Future of the GOP Is Freedom, and Freedom Starts with Thinking for Yourself

#GoRight with Peter Boykin Commentary:

You know, I look at where we are as a movement, and I see a party that has forgotten how to lead. I see people who once called themselves freedom fighters now acting like moral referees. The same people who used to shout “small government” now want to use that government to control who you are, what you say, and how you live.

It feels like the party that once defended liberty has traded it for outrage. We have stopped governing and started performing. We have allowed the noise of the world to drown out the meaning of the Constitution we claim to protect.

We say we believe in the individual, yet we demand everyone act the same. We say we stand for free speech, yet we attack those who speak uncomfortable truths. We say we want unity, but we have built walls inside our own ranks.

I did not become a Republican to join a club. I became one because I believed this was the party that trusted people to live freely. But freedom is not freedom if it only applies to the people you agree with.

When I ran for Lieutenant Governor in 2024, I did it because I wanted to prove that being gay and being conservative are not contradictions. I wanted to show that personal responsibility, limited government, and love for country belong to everyone. Yet even then, many inside the party did not want to talk about it.

They told me,

“We do not need to play identity politics.”

Funny, that rule only seems to apply to people like me. When someone else makes history, they celebrate it. When we do, they go silent. That silence is not strength. It is fear.

The same people who cheer diversity when it fits the narrative are terrified of it when it challenges their comfort. But real leadership does not come from comfort. It comes from courage.

I am proud to be a “Gay Republican”. I am proud to support a vision that values liberty over conformity. I am proud to stand for a movement that should, at its core, trust people to make their own choices. But I am not proud of the hypocrisy that creeps through our ranks, or the bitterness that has replaced brotherhood.

If the GOP is going to survive, it must stop running from its own principles. It must stop confusing loudness with leadership. The Constitution does not care who you love, who you marry, or what church you attend, or even if you attend at all. It cares that you are free.

Freedom is messy. It is uncomfortable. It asks us to tolerate things we do not understand and to defend people we may not agree with. That is what makes it sacred.

Now let me be clear about who I am.

I am a Republican, yes. But I am also a Moderate, a Constitutionalist for Liberty, a Devil’s Advocate for truth, and a Citizen Journalist who believes that freedom dies when we stop questioning power.

Being moderate does not mean being weak. It means having the courage to think instead of just react. It means being conservative about principles and liberal about compassion. It means refusing to be trapped by either extreme.

We have reached a point where people care more about winning arguments than solving problems. (How do you think we ended up Shutting Down the Government for so long?) The left performs outrage, the right performs righteousness, and the American people are left in the wreckage.

We are supposed to be a government of, by, and for the people, but somewhere along the way, “the people” became the audience instead of the authors.

Representation today has become theater. Politicians do not lead anymore; they perform. They chase cameras, not convictions. They read scripts written by donors and lobbyists instead of listening to the people who hired them.

That is not representation. That is manipulation.

And we, the citizens, are guilty too. We have allowed ourselves to be pigeonholed into corners where our opinions have to match the team colors. We act like being independent minded is treason when it is actually the most American thing you can be.

The founders did not build this Republic for groupthink. They built it for debate. They expected disagreement. They designed a system that only works when the people are willing to think for themselves.

That is why I call myself a Constitutionalist for Liberty. Because I do not want a country run by party loyalty. I want a country run by principle.

I am conservative on some things and liberal on others. I believe in freedom of speech, fiscal responsibility, and limited government, but I also believe in fairness, equality, and the right of every individual to live as they see fit.

That balance is not confusion. It is clarity. It is what keeps freedom alive.

If we want to fix this country, we need more citizens willing to question both sides.
We need more people who defend free speech even when they dislike what is being said.
We need fewer politicians chasing polls and donor money, and more citizens chasing truth.

The day we all stop thinking for ourselves is the day the Republic dies.
So stop letting parties, pundits, and platforms tell you what to believe.
Start thinking again. Start questioning again. Start remembering that the word “Republic” literally means public matter, the people’s business.

The future of this nation will not be saved by the far left or the far right. It will be saved by the honest middle, the thinkers, the skeptics, the moderates, the citizens who love their country more than their political tribe.

We can protect children without vilifying adults.
We can defend God without weaponizing faith.
We can honor our history without being trapped by it.

This is what I believe.
This is what #GoRight stands for.
Not blind loyalty. Not cultural warfare. But freedom. Freedom rooted in truth. Freedom defended by principle. Freedom guided by conscience.

That is the America I love.
That is the America I fight for.
And that is the America I refuse to give up on.

Because the future of the GOP, the future of this Republic, the future of freedom itself, will not be decided by who shouts the loudest. It will be decided by who has the courage to think for themselves and stand firm when it matters most.

What happens when the Party of Lincoln forgets what it stands for?

Peter Boykin, founder of Gays for Trump, Constitutional Conservative, and Former 2024 candidate for North Carolina Lieutenant Governor, takes on the hypocrisy eating the Republican Party from the inside.

This isn’t about right or left. It’s about leadership versus theater, truth versus tribalism, and the freedom to think for yourself in a world that demands blind loyalty.

From his run for office to the struggle of being openly gay in conservative politics, Boykin pulls no punches. He exposes the double standards, the fear of “identity politics,” and the silence that too many confuse with strength.

This is a call to wake up the GOP before it loses the Republic it claims to defend, a warning, a challenge, and a reminder that freedom is not just for those who fit the mold.

Watch, listen, and share if you still believe liberty belongs to everyone.
