Is Erasing Rainbow Crosswalks Really the Hill to Die On?

Let’s start in Gainesville. Back in 2019, rainbow crosswalks were painted downtown. They weren’t paid for by taxpayers; the community raised the money themselves. These crosswalks welcomed residents and honored diversity. But now, they’re being erased, not because Gainesville wanted it, but because the state of Florida threatened to withhold millions in critical funding. The city faced an impossible choice: keep the rainbows or lose its bus system and road repairs. As Mayor Harvey Ward put it, Gainesville would be giving up its buses, its roads, everything. That’s not local self-government, that’s coercion.
And Gainesville isn’t alone. Orlando watched the Pulse memorial crosswalk, installed by the state in 2017 to honor the 49 lives lost in the worst mass shooting of its time, scrubbed away overnight. No discussion. No ceremony. Just gone. The state left the city with an $85,000 bill for removals it didn’t even ask for. Daytona’s checkered-flag crosswalks tied to racing culture? Ordered plain gray. Seminole County’s green safety crossings? Erased. Even colorful crosswalks near schools, designed to keep kids safe, are now collateral damage.
The justification? “Uniform safety standards.” But the evidence doesn’t back it up. Bloomberg’s Asphalt Art Safety Study found crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists dropped by 50 percent where crosswalks were painted. Injury crashes fell by 37 percent. Driver yielding went up by 27 percent. Colorful crosswalks make roads safer, not more dangerous. If this were about safety, the state would be repainting every faded white crosswalk in Florida, not erasing bright ones that work.
So, what is this really about? Politics. Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law banning what FDOT calls “social, political, or ideological messages” in crosswalks. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy went further, saying taxpayers expect safe streets, not rainbow banners. DeSantis himself said, “We will not allow our state roads to be commandeered for political purposes.” That’s the spin. But the truth is, the Pulse memorial wasn’t political propaganda; it was community-funded remembrance. Gainesville wasn’t breaking rules, it followed them. These projects were not taxpayer burdens; they were grassroots investments. And now, because of politics, Orlando is stuck with an $85,000 bill to erase perfectly good paint.
Here’s the hypocrisy. Conservatives rallied against Cracker Barrel when the company tried to swap its rustic logo for a bland new one. Social media exploded. Trump himself weighed in. And guess what? The people forced Cracker Barrel to reverse course. That was celebrated as a victory for tradition and a stand against corporate blandness. But when the state of Florida imposes bland uniformity on communities, suddenly many of those same conservatives are silent, or worse, cheer it on. Blandness is tyranny when it comes from corporations, but liberty when it comes from government. That’s not principle, that’s partisan convenience.
And it shows the deeper breakdown in our politics. Nobody is willing to compromise. Everything gets shoved under the label of “DEI” or “woke,” and nothing is sacred. Not even a memorial for 49 murdered Americans at Pulse. Not even community-funded safety murals at schools. In a time when leaders talk about cutting waste, this crusade actually created waste, $85,000 wasted in Orlando alone. Perfectly good streets were destroyed and repainted gray because the state demanded conformity.
As Ronald Reagan once warned, freedom is never more than a generation away from extinction. Pride, at its core, was never about indoctrination or sex. It was about survival, about preserving rights, about saying no one has the power to erase us. And yet here we are, erasing symbols of memory under the guise of “safety,” while studies prove those symbols save lives.
So, let me ask the question plainly: Is erasing rainbow crosswalks really the hill Republicans want to die on? While inflation rages, while roads crumble, while our borders face crisis, do we really want the fight to be over paint on asphalt?
Because this isn’t just about rainbows. It’s about whether local communities can govern themselves without state coercion. It’s about whether we’re going to be consistent on liberty or only defend it when it suits our politics.
Here’s the call to action. Speak up. Contact your legislators. Demand that FDOT follow evidence, not ideology. Stand with your local leaders when they fight for the right to honor their communities. And don’t let party loyalty blind you to government overreach. Because if they can erase a rainbow today, they can erase anything tomorrow.
This is bigger than paint. This is about liberty. Gainesville, Orlando, Daytona, and their communities were silenced by the stroke of a paintbrush. But we still have a voice. And if we don’t use it, liberty itself will be painted over in gray.

Welcome back to #GoRight News, I’m Peter Boykin, founder of Gays for Trump, and now Gays for Liberty and a Constitutionalist for Liberty.
Lately, I’ve been hit with every insult in the book. I’ve been called a right-wing fascist, a racist, and a Nazi. And now, because I have written article after article defending rainbow crosswalk memorials, I’m being called a RINO, a Marxist, and even a Leftist. Why? Because I dared to defend liberty when my fellow conservatives chose silence or hypocrisy.
What’s ironic is that most of the hate and pushback comes from the very group that I have created and grown since 2015. The people within my own group have sadly proven they do not understand the point. This is the problem with a community that has taken so much hate and craziness from the leftist gay community that they are now essentially “Stockholm’d” into being afraid to stand up for their own constitutional rights as gay citizens. In fact, too many would rather run back into the closet and be self-hating. I didn’t create these groups for that. Members who feel this way don’t have to leave, but they must understand that my purpose from the beginning was to prove that being gay or LGBTQ is not a political party and that our constitutional rights and individual liberties are not pawns of any political party.
The truth is, I didn’t just write one article on this issue. I wrote many. And yes, I repeated myself. But every time I dug deeper, more facts came out. And every time, the story revealed itself to be worse than we were told. What began as a “uniform safety” excuse was quickly exposed for what it really was: a political crusade to erase rainbows and the LGBTQ visibility they represent.

Some call this obsession. I call it consistency. Because while others are distracted by labels like “DEI” or “woke,” I refuse to let government overreach go unchallenged.
Let’s be clear: rainbow crosswalks were not taxpayer boondoggles. They were community-funded, grassroots projects. They weren’t illegal. They were approved. And in the case of the Pulse memorial, they were state-instated to honor 49 murdered Americans. Now, suddenly, they are erased, and cities like Orlando are left with $85,000 bills they never asked for. That’s not law and order. That’s government coercion dressed up as traffic policy.
And here’s the hypocrisy. Conservatives cheered when they forced Cracker Barrel to abandon its bland logo redesign. They called it a victory for tradition and the people’s voice. But when the state of Florida does the same thing to rainbow crosswalks, suddenly it’s “just the law.” Blandness is tyranny when it comes from corporations, but liberty when it comes from government. That’s not a principle. That’s partisan convenience.
The saddest part is that most critics of my work don’t even read it. They skim, they assume, they insult. They ignore the facts. They don’t see the studies proving colorful crosswalks save lives. They don’t see the evidence showing this was always about targeting rainbows. They don’t see that collateral damage, school murals, racing stripes, and community art are being erased as well. And they don’t care.
But I care. Because liberty is not about choosing which communities get expression and which don’t. Liberty is not about erasing history to appease evangelicals or to score “anti-woke” points. Liberty is a principle. It applies to everyone, or it applies to no one.
This fight was never about safety. The studies prove painted crosswalks reduce crashes by nearly 50 percent. It was never about law. FDOT itself approved these projects years ago. It was never about taxpayers. Communities paid for them. This was always about targeting rainbows. And the collateral damage was tolerated because it didn’t matter to those in power.
So yes, I’ve been repetitive. Yes, I’ve written about it repeatedly. But only because the truth kept revealing itself, and no one else wanted to say it.
If standing up for liberty and consistency makes me a RINO or a Marxist in some people’s eyes, so be it. I’d rather wear every insult they throw at me than stay silent while liberty gets painted over in gray.
Because liberty isn’t bland, it’s colorful. It’s diverse. And it belongs to We the People.
