Are Alamance County Schools Fully Funded or Fully Accountable?
Why Citizens Have the Right to Demand Both
It usually starts the same way. A school funding debate flares up, emotions rise, and someone deploys the familiar line: “Fully fund the schools.” It sounds moral. It sounds urgent. It also ends the conversation before it ever reaches the truth.
In Alamance County, and increasingly across North Carolina and the rest of the country, the real issue is not whether education matters. The issue is whether accountability, transparency, and responsible stewardship of public funds matter just as much.
The Funding Reality in Alamance County
Over multiple budget cycles, Alamance County commissioners have increased funding to Alamance Burlington Schools. Those increases came through higher allocations, budget restructuring, and even tax hikes approved after public debate. These decisions were made publicly and often controversially, but they were made.
That establishes an important baseline fact: Alamance County did not abandon its schools.
Yet despite increased funding, the district experienced a widespread mold and HVAC crisis impacting dozens of school buildings. Tens of millions of dollars were spent reactively on emergency remediation. Reserves were drained. State oversight followed. HVAC systems do not collapse simultaneously without years of neglect. Mold does not appear across multiple facilities without warning signs being missed or ignored.
That disconnect is what citizens are responding to.
Accountability Is Not an Attack on Education
Too often, residents who raise questions are labeled anti education or accused of undermining teachers. That framing is dishonest. Asking how public money is used is not hostility. It is civic duty.
In a Constitutional Republic, citizens do not lose their right to audit government because the cause is education. Public money belongs to the public. Parents and taxpayers have the right to know how funds were prioritized, why preventative maintenance was deferred, and why expensive emergencies replaced routine upkeep.
State reviews later raised concerns about overspending and purchasing violations during the emergency response. That does not point to a lack of funding. It points to failures in management, planning, and oversight.
The Right to Question Power Locally and Statewide
Citizens bringing concerns to school boards, county commissioners, and legislators are not obstructing progress. They are doing exactly what self government requires.
This does not stop at Alamance County. Similar patterns are playing out across North Carolina and in school systems nationwide. Districts receive increased funding, yet infrastructure deteriorates. Emergency spending replaces long term planning. Critics are dismissed until crises force action.
Whether it is HVAC failures, unsafe facilities, ballooning administrative costs, or opaque budgeting, the theme is the same. Funding is treated as the solution, while accountability is treated as an inconvenience.
That mindset is unsustainable.
Transparency Is a Leadership Obligation
Leadership that treats scrutiny as an attack will always lose public trust. Leadership that treats scrutiny as information can rebuild it.
Those who legislate and allocate funds have a responsibility to listen to citizens who raise concerns early. Every major public failure is preceded by warnings that were ignored. When those warnings are dismissed, the eventual cost is always higher financially, politically, and socially.
The mold and HVAC crisis should not just be fixed. It should be studied as a lesson in what happens when transparency and preventative maintenance are postponed.
Alamance County Reflects a Broader Problem
Education does not exist in a vacuum. In Alamance County, residents are also worried about taxes, infrastructure, public safety, and long term planning. When school funding is mismanaged, it erodes trust across every level of government.
That same erosion is happening statewide and nationally. Taxpayers are increasingly skeptical, not because they oppose education, but because they are tired of being told to write blank checks without seeing results.
Limited government does not mean weak government. It means accountable government. Strong schools require strong oversight. Fully funded systems without transparency are not a success. They are a liability.
The Path Forward for Alamance County and Beyond
This debate should never be framed as funding versus accountability. That is a false choice.
Citizens can support education while demanding transparency. County commissioners and state legislators can approve funding while insisting on measurable outcomes. School leaders can request resources while clearly demonstrating how those resources prevent future crises.
If leaders want long term public trust, they must earn it through openness, humility, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. Dismissing concerned citizens only deepens division and guarantees future resistance.
Alamance County does not need slogans. North Carolina does not need slogans. Neither does the nation.
They need answers.

Can Schools Earn Trust Without Transparency?
#GoRight with Peter Boykin Commentary
Every time this debate comes up, it follows the same tired pattern. Someone asks where the money went. Someone else shouts “fully fund the schools.” And just like that, accountability is treated as heresy.
Here is the truth many officials do not want to admit: funding without accountability is not compassion. It is negligence with a friendly slogan.
Public money is not a donation jar. It is a trust.
When citizens see increased funding approved again and again, followed by system wide failures like mold and HVAC breakdowns, the proper response is not silence. It is scrutiny. That scrutiny is not cruelty. It is responsibility.
HVAC systems do not fail everywhere at once. Mold does not spread across districts by accident. These failures point to deferred maintenance, misaligned priorities, and leadership decisions that deserve examination. Pretending otherwise insults the intelligence of the people paying the bills.
Across North Carolina and across the country, this same story repeats. Warning signs are ignored. Concerns are dismissed. Emergencies follow. Then officials demand more money and accuse skeptics of being anti education.
That is not leadership. That is avoidance.
In a Constitutional Republic, authority flows upward from the people. Auditing government is not rebellion. It is the mechanism that prevents collapse.
What makes these failures worse is the refusal to learn from citizens who spoke up early. Leadership that listens only after disaster strikes is not proactive. It is reactive. And reactive governance is always more expensive and more destructive.
Taxpayers are not asking for perfection. They are asking for honesty. They want leaders who can say, we failed here, here is what we learned, and here is how we will prevent it from happening again.
Supporting education and demanding accountability are not opposites. They are inseparable. One without the other is a lie.
If schools want lasting public trust in Alamance County, across North Carolina, and nationwide, transparency is not optional. It is the price of legitimacy.
That is not anti education.
That is not anti teacher.
That is pro student, pro taxpayer, and pro citizen.
That is Go Right.
