Biden and McCarthy FACE OFF
Newly minted Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy will sit down with Joe Biden in the Oval Office for their first one-on-one as Speaker and President. The powwow comes amid the backdrop of a looming debt-ceiling fight, as well as GOP-led-investigations of Biden, his son Hunter, and administration policies.
Joe and Kevin don’t have much of a history. For his first two years as President, while Nancy Pelosi was Speaker, Biden had enough trouble wrangling Democrat votes, so meeting with the Minority Leader wasn’t a priority.
The main topic of conversation will likely be the debt ceiling. Both camps have signaled as much:
Biden released a memo with two questions he had for the meeting, one of which is: “Will the Speaker commit to the bedrock principle that the United States will never default on its financial obligations?
Biden is referring to Republicans’ intention to use the debt ceiling to reign in spending.
McCarthy responded on Twitter, saying: “President Biden: I accept your invitation to sit down and discuss a responsible debt ceiling increase to address irresponsible government spending.”
McCarthy is going to tie a green light on the debt-ceiling increase to a commitment to balance the budget and reduce the federal debt.
The budget: And the second question in Biden’s memo was: “When will Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans release their budget?
Biden later jabbed McCarthy while speaking to reporters, saying: “Show me your budget, and I’ll show you mine.”
McCarthy punched back later, saying he plans to discuss the budget in-person with Biden, and argued that they need to deliver a balanced budget [as opposed to the $1.3 trillion dollar deficit in 2022], saying “every family does it, every business, every state, every county.”
McCarthy also said in a separate statement: “To think that the president believes there’s no place in government you can’t cut and have a savings for the hardworking taxpayers? There’s so much waste out there, and we’ve got to put ourselves back on a trajectory that balances.”
With the slim Republican majority, McCarthy will need every vote he can get on this next budget. That means the same 20 MAGA Republicans who held out during the vote for Speaker will be in a unique position to demand a balanced budget that puts the American people first.
Temper your expectations on this first meeting. I don’t anticipate any bombshells out of this meeting. We’ll probably hear some generic sound bites from both men like “it was a productive meeting, but there’s a long way to go.” The bigger battles over these topics will come as we head into the spring and summer.
