Joe Biden is significantly broadening the scope of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), granting work authorization to nearly half a million undocumented immigrants. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas asserts that this is necessary because returning to their home countries would pose safety risks.
.
Delving into the Details: TPS will now encompass approximately 472,000 undocumented individuals from Venezuela who entered the U.S. between March 2021 and July 31, 2023.
A Broader Perspective: This move coincides with a surge in illegal border crossings, reaching unprecedented levels. In fiscal year 2022, a staggering 2.2 million undocumented immigrants were apprehended at the southern border. Over the past week alone, an average of 9,000 migrants entered the U.S. through the southern border daily.
Impact on American Workers: Last year, 1 in 5 workers were born outside the United States to non-citizen parents, marking the highest proportion of the workforce with such demographics.
Expanding the Horizon: The Biden administration also announced its decision to extend TPS to individuals from Afghanistan who arrived in the U.S. between May 2022 and September 20, 2023.
Taking a Step Back: Bill Melugin, an esteemed reporter covering the border crisis for Fox News, shared his insights, saying, “I’m also hearing from Border Patrol agents who are groaning about this news, saying it will just make the problem worse and attract more Venezuelans to the border who will hope for a new TPS redesignation next year.”
