Christian Veteran in Iowa Faces Hate Crime Charges Over Satanic Statue Takedown
In a shocking turn of events, Christian veteran Michael Cassidy, who boldly dismantled a satanic Baphomet statue at the Iowa State Capitol last year, is now facing hate crime charges for his actions.
Wondering about Baphomet? It’s a symbolic figure in the Satanic Temple, often depicted as a goat-headed deity.
Let’s rewind: In December of last year, the Satanic Temple erected the Baphomet statue in direct opposition to a Nativity scene displayed at the Iowa Statehouse. On December 15, 2023, Cassidy took matters into his own hands, removing the head from the satanic display and smashing it on the floor. His reason? He claimed to be “awakening Christians to the anti-Christian acts promoted by our government.”
Initially, Cassidy was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief at the time of his arrest. However, prosecutors later amended the charges, adding hate crime allegations. Their claim? “Evidence shows the defendant made statements to law enforcement and the public indicating he destroyed the property because of the victim’s religion.”
The potential consequences for Cassidy are significant. He now faces a fine of up to $7,500 and a maximum prison sentence of five years.
Offering his perspective on the matter, Human Events Senior Editor Jack Posobiec shared on X: “A Christian veteran was just charged with a hate crime yesterday for knocking over a statue of Satan, the personification of evil. This happened in Iowa, America’s heartland. This is what our country has become.”

This incident has sparked debates about religious freedom, government displays, and the blurred lines between personal beliefs and criminal charges.
