Joe Biden told reporters: “Everybody should be concerned about [monkeypox]”

Thankfully, Joe is wrong [or intentionally spreading fear].

The most important thing to know is that the risk to the general public is extremely low, according to the Associated Press.

Outbreak details: Roughly 100 cases of monkeypox have been detected in several countries, including the U.S., U.K., Spain, Israel, Canada, and Australia. Cases in New York, Massachusetts, and Florida are currently being investigated.

The outbreak is said to have originated at a Pride festival in Spain, where 80,000 people attended.

WTF is monkeypox? It’s a virus in the same family as smallpox, cowpox, and horsepox. It was first identified in 1958 in colonies of monkeys in Africa.

Is it highly transmissive? No. There’s no evidence of asymptomatic transmission, making it much easier to contain.

Evidence suggests it’s only shared through very close contact.

The WHO says most cases occurred in men who have had sex with men.

It’s also a slow-mutating virus, which makes it easier to contain. In a small 2003 outbreak, the smallpox vaccine was used effectively.

What are the symptoms? Thankfully, monkeypox is much milder than the other members of its viral family. Typical symptoms are similar to the flu and worse cases involve rash and small lesions. Most people recover in 2-4 weeks without needing to be hospitalized.

Big picture: Every year there are thousands of cases of monkeypox in Africa. What makes these cases unique is that they didn’t originate in Africa.

Bonus points: If you were born before the early 1970s, you probably received the smallpox vaccine, which would offer you protection against the monkeypox. So Boomers and GenX, kudos to you.

Coincidence? Just not long ago, the Wuhan Institute of Virology assembled a monkeypox virus genome, allowing the virus to be identified through PCR tests, using a method researchers flagged for potentially creating a “contagious pathogen” according to the National Pulse.
