FDA Adjusts Stance on Ivermectin for COVID-19 Treatment
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently communicated that physicians now have the discretion to prescribe ivermectin for the treatment of Covid-19, marking a departure from the agency’s earlier directives issued during the peak of the pandemic.
Background: In the initial stages of the pandemic, medical practitioners shared anecdotal reports suggesting the potential effectiveness of ivermectin in expediting patients’ recovery from Covid-19. Notably, the FDA initially granted approval for ivermectin in 1986 for addressing parasitic infections.
Key Details: A group of three doctors has initiated a lawsuit against the FDA, asserting that the agency unjustifiably interfered with their medical practice. During the legal proceedings, Ashley Cheung Honald, the FDA’s legal representative, stated the:
“FDA explicitly acknowledges the authority of doctors to prescribe ivermectin for Covid-19 treatment.”
This assertion raises questions due to the following…
Context of Ivermectin’s Controversy: In the summer of 2021, amidst the Biden administration’s drive to promote mass Covid-19 vaccinations, the FDA posted a tweet questioning the use of ivermectin, with a message emphasizing, “You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y’all. Stop it.” This social media post contributed to the narrative that portrayed ivermectin as a “horse de-wormer,” an angle frequently echoed in media and some political circles.
The tweet featured a link to an article titled ‘Why You Should Not Use Ivermectin to Treat or Prevent COVID-19,’ which explicitly stated that “The FDA has not granted authorization or approval for the use of ivermectin in preventing or treating Covid-19 in humans.”
While the FDA’s stance did not outright prohibit ivermectin, its guidance potentially led to instances where pharmacies declined to fulfill prescriptions for the drug.
The ongoing lawsuit and evolving regulatory position on ivermectin warrant careful observation.
