Joe Biden is Fashionably Late Visit to East Palestine and it Sparks Criticism
Joe Biden has finally decided to grace East Palestine, Ohio, with his presence, and the timing couldn’t be more suspect—must be an election year. A year after a toxic train derailment wreaked havoc on the small town, leaving devastation in its wake, the President has chosen this moment to assess the situation.
The nightmare unfolded on February 3, 2023, when a Norfolk Southern train, laden with toxic chemicals, derailed in the midst of the town’s approximately 5,000 residents. The subsequent decision to incinerate the spilled materials released poisonous fumes into the air, contaminated the soil, and compromised the water supply, forcing numerous residents to evacuate.
Administration officials have now confirmed Biden’s plans to visit in February, claiming he intends to “meet with residents impacted by the Norfolk Southern train derailment and assess the progress that his Administration has helped deliver.” However, the skepticism runs deep, as Biden has yet to approve Ohio Governor DeWine’s request for a disaster declaration, which would expedite additional resources to the affected residents.
Cries of “I call BS” echo as Biden’s response—or lack thereof—continues to draw widespread criticism. In August, when questioned about his absence from the site, he nonchalantly responded, “I haven’t had the occasion… There’s a lot going on.” Ironically, during that same month, he spent a staggering 23 out of 30 days on vacation.
In a stark contrast, former President Donald Trump took swift action, arriving in East Palestine just three weeks after the disaster. Trump’s hands-on approach included flying in pallets of water and supplies, offering comfort to citizens, and even personally providing McDonald’s to those in need.
East Palestine’s Mayor Trent Conaway, a staunch Trump supporter, responded to Biden’s impending visit, stating, “The President is always welcome to our town. That being said, I don’t know what he would do here now.”
The sentiments are shared by East Palestine business owner DJ Yokley, who asserts, “He did not show up to the greatest catastrophe of 2023. And now, he’s going to show up because it’s an election year.” The skepticism lingers as Biden attempts to navigate the aftermath of a disaster that has left lasting scars on the community.
