Juneteenth, Pride, And the Politics of Showing Up

Freedom Is Not a Left-Wing Idea

June has become one of the most controversial months of the year, but maybe that is exactly why it matters.

Right in the middle of the year, June should serve as a reminder to stop letting ourselves get distracted, divided, and dragged into endless political fights while the real things that matter get ignored. We share this month with Juneteenth. We honor the sacrifices of our veterans and those who defended liberty. We remember Pride and the long struggle for equal citizenship. At the end of the day, God will know who stood on the side of love.

Juneteenth is not a lie. Pride is not owned by the left. Freedom should never be treated like a partisan inconvenience.

Juneteenth marks the moment when freedom finally reached enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. That does not make the holiday fake. It makes it a reminder that liberty can be declared on paper long before it is fully delivered in real life.

That is also why Pride still matters.

Pride is not supposed to be about surrendering to the left, promoting indecency, or turning identity into a political weapon. Pride, at its best, is about showing up, remembering history, and saying that gay Americans are not second-class citizens. We are not asking for special rights. We are defending equal rights.

If Republicans abandon every space where the left has planted a flag, then we are not conserving anything. We are retreating. We cannot complain that Pride has become too political if we refuse to participate in shaping it. We cannot say we believe in freedom while mocking the people who still have to defend their place in public life.

That is why the words of Dolly Parton matter. She said it in a way more Christians should understand: if you are gay, you are gay. If you are straight, you are straight. We are who we are. We are all God’s children. She also made the point that if someone claims to be a good Christian, they should be careful about judging other people, because judgment belongs to God.

That is how true Christians should operate. Not by using faith as a weapon. Not by pretending cruelty is courage. Not by acting like God needs us to sit on His throne and condemn everyone else. We have enough work to do in our own hearts.

Christians are called to love one another. That does not mean every person agrees on every issue. It does mean we should treat one another with dignity, respect, and humility. It means we should stop turning every human being into a political enemy.

For gay conservatives, this is the fight. We are told by the left that because we are gay, we must belong to them. We are told by some on the right that because we are gay, we do not belong at all. Both are wrong.

Gays For Liberty exists because Pride does not have to belong to the left. Faith does not have to belong to judgment. Freedom does not have to be selective. A constitutional republic must protect the rights of citizens even when those citizens make others uncomfortable.

Showing Up Is How We Change It

The Go Right with Peter Boykin Constitutionalist for Liberty Perspective

I keep coming back to one basic truth. Pride does not have to belong to the left, and freedom does not have to be filtered through party politics. If we want Pride to change, we have to show up. If we want the Republican Party to remember that liberty means liberty for all citizens, we have to be in the room. If we want faith to be about love instead of judgment, we have to say so out loud.

I am a gay Republican. I am a Constitutionalist for Liberty. I believe in faith, family, freedom, and equal citizenship. Those things are not contradictions. They are exactly why I speak up.

When people attack Juneteenth as fake or Pride as nothing more than left-wing politics, they miss the point. These moments are not about worshiping government or surrendering to activists. They are about remembering that freedom has always required people to stand up and claim it. Sometimes that means former slaves celebrating emancipation in Texas. Sometimes that means gay Americans refusing to be invisible. Sometimes that means conservatives walking into spaces the left thought it owned and saying, no, liberty belongs to us too.

June should not be a month where Americans tear each other apart. It should be a checkpoint in the middle of the year where we ask ourselves whether we are living by the principles we claim to defend. Are we protecting freedom? Are we honoring history? Are we treating our neighbors with respect? Are we focused on what really matters, or are we letting outrage merchants divide us for clicks, votes, and attention?

Dolly Parton’s message is simple, but powerful. We are not God. We are not the judge. We are supposed to love one another. That should not be controversial, especially among Christians.

At the end of the day, God will know who was on the side of love. God will know who used His name to heal and who used it to hurt. God will know who stood for liberty and who only believed in liberty when it was comfortable.

That is why I will keep showing up. Not to surrender Pride to the left, but to bring it back to purpose. Not to let politics erase history, but to remind America that freedom is worth defending every time it is tested.

This is Go Right with Peter Boykin, the Constitutionalist for Liberty. Let’s Go Right.

June has become controversial, but it should be a reminder of freedom, respect, and love. Peter Boykin connects Juneteenth, Pride, faith, veterans, and Dolly Parton’s message about not judging others into a call for conservatives to show up, defend liberty, and stop surrendering Pride to the left.

Relevant Quotes And Source Notes

Juneteenth

The National Archives notes that General Order No. 3 informed Texans that “all enslaved people were now free.” This supports the article’s point that Juneteenth is rooted in real American history, not political fiction.

The Social Security Administration Legislative Bulletin confirms that the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act became Public Law 117-17 on June 17, 2021.

The U.S. House Clerk record confirms the House passed the bill by a vote of 415 to 14.

Pride And Stonewall

The National Park Service describes the Stonewall Uprising as “a milestone in the quest for civil rights.” This supports the article’s point that Pride has historical roots in equal citizenship and civil rights.

The Smithsonian notes that the first Pride parades marked the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. This supports the article’s explanation that Pride began as remembrance, visibility, and public witness.

Dolly Parton, Faith, And Judgment

Dolly Parton’s message is a direct example of the article’s faith-based argument. She said:

“If you’re gay, you’re gay. If you’re straight, you’re straight. We are who we are.”

She also said Christians should not judge others because:

“That’s God’s job. We’re not God.”

These comments support the article’s argument that true Christians should operate with love, humility, and respect instead of using faith as a weapon.

Veterans And June

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs identifies June as PTSD Awareness Month. This supports the article’s point that June is not only about Pride or Juneteenth, but also a time to remember veterans, trauma, sacrifice, and the real issues that deserve our attention.

Editorial Source Note

This article uses Juneteenth, Pride, Dolly Parton’s comments, Scripture, and veteran awareness as connected examples of one larger point: freedom, dignity, love, and respect should not be surrendered to partisan politics. June should not be treated as a month of division. It should be a mid-year reminder that Americans can honor history, defend liberty, respect one another, and focus on the real issues that matter.
