All three scientists present during a congressional hearing to examine the origins of the covid pandemic contradicted earlier claims made by Dr. Anthony Fauci that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) never funded gain-of-function research – which prominent scientists believe led to the creation of covid-19.

What is ‘gain of function’?

In simple terms, it’s when scientists speed up the mutation of a virus in a lab. Through these mutations, a virus ‘gains news functions’ and can become much more deadly.

Back up: Fauci has repeatedly denied funding gain-of-function research, but most notably he denied it under oat during a Congressional hearing in May 2021 when he said the NIH:

“has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”

The contradictions: Dr. Richard Ebright, a Rutgers University microbiologist said:

“The statements made on repeated occasions to the public, to the press and to policymakers by the NIAID director, Dr. Fauci, have been untruthful. I do not understand why those statements are being made because they are demonstrably false.”

Senator Rand Paul took a well-deserved victory lap after the hearings, saying:

“All three witnesses contradicted [Fauci]… I think that’s a big deal because the first hearing we have had where scientists who actually look at this information [and], as informed as he is, completely disagree with him and say that the research was gain-of-function and the NIH paid for it.”
