Should The NC GOP Platform Defend Strong Families or Keep Fighting Settled Marriage Law?
A party platform tells voters what a party believes, what it values, and what kind of government it wants to build. That is why the North Carolina Republican Party’s current platform deserves serious attention, especially when it talks about family, marriage, liberty, and equal treatment under the law.
The NC GOP says it believes in limited government, individual liberty, religious freedom, equal treatment, and the rule of law. Those are Republican principles. Those are conservative principles. Those are constitutional principles.
But then the platform turns around and says traditional marriage and family, based on marriage between one man and one woman, is the foundation for a civil society. It supports actions to return marriage laws to the states. It supports the marriage amendment as part of the North Carolina Constitution and encourages efforts to defend it.
That is not just outdated. It is legally unrealistic, politically unnecessary, and constitutionally inconsistent with the same platform’s own promise that government should treat all citizens impartially and equally under the law.
This is not an argument against family.
This is not an argument against faith.
This is not an argument against parents, children, churches, or tradition.
This is an argument that the government does not have constitutional authority to downgrade one lawful marriage because it does not fit one religious or cultural preference.
The Modern NC GOP Platform Still Has a Marriage Problem
The current NC GOP platform still frames marriage as one man and one woman. It still supports returning marriage law to the states. It still supports defending North Carolina’s marriage amendment.
That language ignores where the law actually stands.
In Obergefell v. Hodges, the United States Supreme Court held that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry under the Fourteenth Amendment. That means states cannot deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples or refuse to recognize lawful same-sex marriages on unequal terms.
The Respect for Marriage Act added another layer of federal protection. It requires states to recognize marriages legally performed in other states and requires federal recognition of valid marriages between two individuals. It also protects religious liberty by making clear that churches, ministries, and nonprofit religious organizations cannot be forced to participate in marriage ceremonies that violate their beliefs.
That matters.
Because the conservative answer should not be to erase religious liberty.
The conservative answer should also not be to erase civil marriage equality.
The answer is simple. Protect churches from government coercion. Protect citizens from government discrimination. Respect religious conscience. Respect civil law. Keep government in its lane.
Marriage Is Not the Same Debate as Abortion
Some Republicans try to compare marriage to abortion and argue that both should simply be returned to the states. That comparison does not hold.
Marriage creates a lifetime legal structure. It affects taxes, property, inheritance, hospital visitation, parental rights, health insurance, Social Security, veterans’ benefits, estate planning, immigration, medical decision making, and countless other legal responsibilities.
A marriage does not become less real when a couple crosses a state line.
If North Carolina recognized one marriage while South Carolina rejected it, or Virginia honored it while Tennessee denied it, the country would create legal chaos for families who have already built their lives around lawful marriages.
That is not conservative.
That is government instability.
That is exactly the kind of unequal treatment the Fourteenth Amendment was designed to prevent.
Religious Liberty Does Not Require Civil Inequality
North Carolina’s Constitution protects religious liberty. It says people have the natural and inalienable right to worship according to the dictates of their own conscience, and that no human authority shall interfere with the rights of conscience.
That principle is vital.
Churches should not be forced to perform same-sex weddings.
Pastors should not be forced to violate their doctrine.
Religious institutions should not be punished for teaching what they believe.
But civil marriage is not church doctrine. Civil marriage is a legal status issued and recognized by the government. A couple can be married by a magistrate, a judge, or a civil official without asking any church to bless it.
That is where the NC GOP platform loses its constitutional footing.
It can defend religious liberty without asking the state to treat gay citizens as second-class participants in civil society.
It can defend the family without pretending gay couples do not build families.
It can defend children without denying that many children are already being raised by same-sex parents who need the stability and protection that marriage provides.
The Platform Contradicts Itself
The NC GOP platform says government should treat all citizens impartially and equally under the law. That statement is correct.
But supporting a marriage amendment that denies one class of citizens equal access to civil marriage is not impartial treatment.
It is selective government recognition.
It says one couple’s legal commitment is worthy of protection, while another couple’s legal commitment is a threat to civilization.
That is not limited government.
That is government picking winners and losers in private family life.
Republicans should be honest about this. If we believe government is too powerful, too intrusive, and too willing to punish citizens for political reasons, then we should not hand that same government the power to decide that one lawful family counts less than another.
Strong Families Should Be the Goal, Not Political Exclusion
There is a better Republican argument.
The GOP can and should champion strong families. It can support marriage. It can support fatherhood. It can support motherhood. It can support adoption. It can support foster parents. It can support parental rights. It can support children having stable homes.
None of that requires the party to attack same-sex civil marriage.
A gay couple in a long-term committed relationship is not weakening another family’s marriage. A lesbian couple raising children is not stopping a mother and father from building a good home. A same-sex couple taking care of aging parents, paying taxes, attending church, volunteering in the community, and honoring their vows is not the enemy of civilization.
The real threats to family are divorce, addiction, poverty, crime, broken schools, inflation, fatherlessness, isolation, government dependency, and cultural chaos.
The Republican Party should fight those battles instead of relitigating whether two consenting adults should have their civil marriage recognized by the state.
The National GOP Has Already Moved Past This Fight
The national Republican platform changed direction in 2024. It no longer made opposition to same-sex marriage a central plank the way older GOP platforms did. That was not an accident. It reflected political reality.
Most Americans do not want the country dragged backward into marriage battles that have already been settled for years.
Even many Republicans who personally believe in traditional marriage do not want government tearing apart existing same-sex marriages or telling gay couples their legal commitments are invalid.
That is where the NC GOP should be paying attention.
North Carolina is not a one-party state. Unaffiliated voters are the largest registration bloc. Republicans have recently moved ahead of Democrats in registration, which is an important achievement, but the state is still competitive. Winning North Carolina requires persuasion beyond the most rigid corners of the party base.
A platform that tells gay Republicans, gay conservatives, gay veterans, gay parents, gay Christians, and gay taxpayers that their marriages are a problem is not smart politics.
It is self-sabotage.
As A Gay Republican, I Am Not Asking the Party to Abandon Family Values
As an openly gay Republican, founder of Gays for Trump, and someone who has been in a long-term relationship for 28 years, I believe in strong families. I am also the child of a heterosexual marriage that lasted more than 50 years. I know the value of commitment. I know the importance of stability. I know what marriage means to families, children, and communities.
That is exactly why this issue matters.
I am not asking Republicans to stop believing in marriage.
I am asking Republicans to stop using the platform to imply that only some marriages strengthen society.
I am not asking churches to change their doctrine.
I am asking the government to follow the Constitution.
I am not asking conservatives to surrender their beliefs.
I am asking conservatives to apply their own principles consistently.
If we believe in limited government, then government should not be used as a weapon against lawful families.
If we believe in religious liberty, then we should protect conscience without turning one religious belief into civil law for everyone else.
If we believe in equal treatment, then equal treatment cannot stop at the courthouse door when gay citizens walk in.
The NC GOP Platform Should Be Rewritten
The NC GOP does not need to abandon family language. It needs to modernize it.
The platform should say something more like this:
The North Carolina Republican Party affirms the importance of strong families, stable marriages, parental rights, adoption, foster care, and the well-being of children. We respect the religious liberty of individuals, churches, and faith-based institutions to define and solemnize marriage according to their beliefs. We also recognize that civil marriage is governed by constitutional law, and we support equal treatment of all citizens under the law while defending religious conscience from government coercion.
That would be constitutional.
That would be conservative.
That would defend both faith and freedom.
That would welcome gay Republicans without asking religious Republicans to violate their conscience.
That would make the party stronger.
The Unconstitutional NC GOP Platform Must Change
The Go Right with Peter Boykin Perspective
The NC GOP platform has a choice to make.
It can keep fighting a symbolic battle against gay marriage while claiming to support equal treatment.
Or it can grow up politically, stand on the Constitution, and defend strong families without alienating citizens who already share many Republican values.
This issue is bigger than one sentence in a party document. It is about whether the Republican Party in North Carolina wants to be a serious governing party or a shrinking club that tells people they are welcome only if their family looks exactly the way someone else prefers.
The Constitution does not say “We the approved people.”
It does not say “We the straight people.”
It says, “We the People.”
That includes gay conservatives.
That includes gay Republicans.
That includes same-sex couples who work, pay taxes, care for family, serve their communities, and believe in this country.
The NC GOP can defend traditional families without attacking gay families. It can defend religious liberty without endorsing civil inequality. It can protect children without pretending that stable same-sex households do not exist. It can be pro-family without being anti-gay.
That is the compromise.
That is the constitutional path.
And that is how the Republican Party becomes a true big tent party again.
