The Lawrence County School System in Tennessee has adopted a baffling policy: doctor’s notes will no longer excuse student absences. Unless a student has a chronic illness on file, an emergency, or a religious exemption, all absences are marked the same, even if a child has the flu or strep.
Parents are understandably furious. One mom said her daughter missed 17 days last year due to legitimate illness. Under the new rules, even a few days like that could lead to court referrals. That’s because after just 3 absences, interventions start, and at 8 absences, students may be sent to juvenile court, regardless of medical documentation.
It gets worse: the district even warned doctors not to write notes for minor sickness, claiming things like sniffles aren’t enough to miss school. The Director literally said, “We’ve all gone to work sick and beat up.”
So the message to families is clear: don’t trust your doctor, don’t rest when you’re ill, and if you do, you’ll be punished.
Let’s be real. This isn’t about education. It’s about attendance numbers and state funding. And it risks:
Spreading illness to others
Forcing sick kids into classrooms
Criminalizing parents trying to do the right thing
This policy is tone-deaf, harmful, and flat-out dangerous. It treats children like truants for catching a cold and undermines both public health and common sense.
No wonder parents are considering homeschooling or legal action. When a school decides that even a doctor’s note isn’t enough, it’s not about learning anymore, it’s about control.

Where in the Constitution does it say the government can override your doctor’s orders and threaten your child with court for being sick? Nowhere. Because this isn’t education, it’s indoctrination by intimidation.
We are watching the system weaponize truancy laws to turn everyday families into criminals. That’s not liberty. That’s tyranny wrapped in school colors.
It’s time to reclaim parental sovereignty, restore medical freedom, and demand accountability from those who govern our children’s education. Our schools should support families, not surveil them.
