The Electoral Tango and Just How Illicit Immigration Sways the Political Dance
Immigration experts are sounding the alarm, highlighting the ominous potential of illegal immigration to sway the distribution of House seats and Electoral College votes in a presidential election.
The root of this concern traces back to a 2021 executive order inked by Joe Biden, a move that mandated the US Census Bureau to factor in all residents, irrespective of their citizenship status, in the population count.
The numbers game: A conservative estimate suggests a staggering 16.8 million illegal aliens currently reside in the U.S. [though some argue the figure is even higher]. Considering the average House seat represents 761,168 residents, these undocumented individuals could lay claim to a whopping 22 House seats.
In the grand spectacle of a presidential election, states rake in Electoral College votes corresponding to their House seat count. If, courtesy of sanctuary city NYC, New York manages to tack on an extra House seat after the upcoming census, it translates to an additional Electoral College vote in the race for the presidency.
Quotable moment: Mark Krikorian, Executive Director at the Center for Immigration Studies, condemned the situation, stating, “Illegal immigrants aren’t even supposed to be here, so their inclusion in the census count for purposes of apportionment really is outrageous.”
What’s the remedy? Enter the stage: Republican lawmakers with the Equal Representation Act. This proposed legislation aims to compel the Census Bureau to exclude non-citizens from its counts. Yet, with a Democrat President and Democrat-controlled Senate, the odds of this act passing appear slim.
The broad vista: The next census tally won’t unfold until 2030, sidelining this issue for the upcoming election. However, action must be taken to avert the risk of bestowing representation on an estimated 20 million illegal residents, predominantly clustered in Democrat strongholds.
