A federal judge announced her “preliminary intent” to agree to former President Donald Trump’s request to appoint a ‘special master’ to review all the records seized by the FBI during their unprecedented raid on Mar-a-Lago earlier this month.

Back up: Trump’s legal team requested the appointment of the special master, calling the raid an “unreasonable search and seizure,” and demanding the return of any items outside the scope of the FBI’s warrant.

A ‘special master’ is a third-party [often a retired judge] without bias who would be appointed to review the seized materials and determine what is within the scope of the FBI’s warrant and what documents are protected by attorney-client privilege.

What the judge said: U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, wrote in a filing:

“Pursuant to Rule 53(b) (1) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and the Court’s inherent authority, and without prejudice to the parties’ objections, the Court hereby provides notice of its preliminary intent to appoint a special master in this case.”

Related: This decision comes one day after the Department of Justice was forced to make public the affidavit it used to get the search warrant to raid Trump’s home. As most predicted, the version made public was laughably redacted.

What happens next? Judge Cannon gave the Department of Justice until Tuesday to file a public response to Trump’s request. She also scheduled the hearing for the special master.
