When Outrage Gets Clicks But Real Issues Get Ignored

Pride, Data Centers, and the Political Machine That Feeds on Distraction

There was a moment at the North Carolina Republican Convention that said more than people probably realized.

President Trump was speaking to a room full of Republicans, and like any political crowd, they knew when to cheer. But when the topic turned to transgender issues, the room lit up. The applause got louder. The energy changed. The reaction was immediate.

Then Trump did something interesting.

He pointed it out.

He basically said he wished people got that fired up about the other issues too. The things that actually hit every household. The things that affect paychecks, taxes, energy, safety, and the future of the country.

And he was right.

That moment exposed a problem inside modern politics, especially on the right.

People will roar over a culture war line.

They will jump to their feet over bathrooms, Pride flags, drag queens, trans athletes, and whatever social issue is trending that week.

But will they show that same fire over farmland being swallowed by massive development?

Will they get that loud over water use?

Will they demand answers about the power grid?

Will they show up when local officials approve projects that could reshape their towns for generations?

Will they care when taxes, utility bills, roads, schools, and infrastructure are on the line?

Too often, the answer is no.

That is the trap.

The loudest issues are not always the most important ones. The most emotional arguments are not always the ones that will change your daily life. And the topics that get the most clicks are not always the topics that deserve the most attention.

That is why this conversation matters.

Because if we only show up for outrage, outrage is all politicians, media outlets, and social media algorithms will keep feeding us.

Pride Gets Attention Because People Are Trained To React

Pride Month is coming again, and yes, I will be posting my usual Pride Month content.

I will talk about gay Americans. I will talk about our rights. I will talk about the difference between equality and excess. I will talk about the parts of Pride that matter and the parts that have gone too far. I will defend gay conservatives who are tired of being politically homeless. I will also call out the people who pretend they are only against radical activism when their words make it obvious they are really against gay people existing openly at all.

That conversation matters.

But it also proves a bigger point.

The minute the topic is Pride, people show up.

Some show up with thoughtful arguments.

Some show up with sincere faith-based concerns.

Some show up with political frustration.

Some show up just to be hateful.

And some show up because they cannot resist anything involving gay people, rainbows, bathrooms, drag queens, trans issues, or the latest viral outrage of the day.

That reaction is the fuel.

Media companies know it.

Politicians know it.

Social media platforms know it.

Activists on both sides know it.

The outrage machine is not stupid. It knows exactly what makes people stop scrolling.

A headline about Pride will get more comments than a serious article about water infrastructure.

A fight about bathrooms will get more shares than a report about farmland being converted into massive industrial development.

A rainbow flag will get more emotional reaction than a utility rate increase.

A drag queen will get more attention than a zoning board meeting that changes the future of a town.

That is not an accident.

That is the business model.

The Three Objections People Keep Hiding Behind

When people object to gay Americans, their arguments usually come down to three basic claims.

They say it is not normal.

They say it is wrong.

They say it is gross.

Everything else is usually a more polished version of one of those three ideas.

“It is not normal” is the social argument.

“It is wrong” is the moral or religious argument.

“It is gross” is the emotional argument.

People dress these claims up in politics, faith, tradition, biology, child protection, family values, or public decency, but the root of it is usually the same.

They are uncomfortable with same-sex attraction, and instead of admitting that discomfort, they try to turn it into public policy.

That does not mean every criticism of Pride is anti-gay. It is not.

I have criticized Pride myself.

I have said children do not belong in adult sexualized spaces. I have said public indecency should not be excused because someone wraps it in a rainbow flag. I have said the gay community allowed activists, grifters, corporations, and political operatives to turn something meaningful into a circus in too many places.

But there is a difference between criticizing excess and attacking existence.

There is a difference between saying “keep adult content away from children” and saying “gay people are filth.”

There is a difference between defending religious liberty and using religion as a weapon against citizenship.

There is a difference between believing marriage is sacred and demanding the government strip civil marriage rights from gay Americans.

That distinction matters.

And too many people do not want to make it.

Controversial Topics Work Because They Are Easy To Exploit

Culture war topics are easy to exploit because they are emotional.

They hit identity.

They hit religion.

They hit fear.

They hit disgust.

They hit tribal loyalty.

That is why they spread so quickly.

A person does not need to understand zoning law to have an opinion about Pride.

A person does not need to understand water capacity to yell about bathrooms.

A person does not need to study energy demand to post a meme about rainbow flags.

A person does not need to know how local tax incentives work to accuse gay people of destroying America.

That is the trap.

The easiest topics to react to are not always the most important topics to understand.

And the hardest topics to understand are often the ones that matter most.

That is why we are losing focus.

Data Centers Are A Perfect Example

Look at what is happening with massive data centers in North Carolina and across the country.

These projects are being sold as economic development, technology growth, jobs, innovation, artificial intelligence, and future infrastructure.

Some of that may be true.

But there are also serious questions that deserve public attention.

How much water will they use?

How much electricity will they demand?

Who pays for the grid upgrades?

Will ordinary ratepayers get stuck with higher power bills?

How much farmland will be lost?

How many long-term jobs will actually be created after construction is finished?

What happens to nearby communities when noise, heat, power demand, and water demand increase?

What tax breaks are being offered?

What accountability is being required?

Who benefits?

Who pays?

These are not small questions.

These are kitchen table questions.

These are property owner questions.

These are farmer questions.

These are taxpayer questions.

These are local government questions.

These are working family questions.

And yet, too often, they get a fraction of the attention that a Pride post gets in ten minutes.

That is insane.

Water, Power, Land, and Accountability Matter More Than The Latest Outrage

Some large data centers can use millions of gallons of water per day, especially under peak cooling demand. Not every project is the same. Some use different cooling systems. Some use less water. Some companies claim they are improving efficiency.

Fine.

Then prove it.

Put the numbers in public.

Show the water impact.

Show the energy impact.

Show who pays for the infrastructure.

Show the long-term job count.

Show the tax agreement.

Show the environmental review.

Show the strain on local resources.

Show the public what is being approved before the deal is already done.

That is not anti-technology.

That is pro-accountability.

I am not against growth. I am not against business. I am not against innovation. I am not against North Carolina being part of the future.

But growth without wisdom becomes destruction.

A town can grow and still lose itself.

A county can welcome investment and still sell out its people.

A state can chase technology and still forget the farms, families, workers, and communities that made it worth living in to begin with.

That is what we need to talk about.

But it is hard to get people to care because there is no instant emotional payoff.

There is no viral meme.

There is no easy villain.

There is no rainbow flag to scream at.

There is no bathroom sign to argue over.

There is just a zoning meeting, a utility report, a water study, a tax incentive package, and a long-term consequence that most people will not notice until it is too late.

Trump Was Right About One Thing

Trump once made a point at the North Carolina Republican convention that stuck with me.

When the crowd got fired up over transgender issues, he basically pointed out that people seemed to get more excited about that than things like tax cuts and other issues that affect everybody.

He was right.

Whether people want to admit it or not, he saw the imbalance.

People will roar over a culture war line.

But will they roar over water rights?

Will they roar over farmland?

Will they roar over power bills?

Will they roar over local tax burdens?

Will they roar over roads, infrastructure, zoning, schools, crime, jobs, debt, and government accountability?

They should.

But too often they do not.

That is the problem.

The Political Class Wants You Angry, Not Focused

Politicians love outrage because outrage is easier than results.

Outrage keeps people distracted.

Outrage keeps people donating.

Outrage keeps people sharing.

Outrage keeps people loyal.

Outrage keeps people from asking harder questions.

If a politician can keep you furious about a rainbow flag, maybe you will not ask why your power bill keeps climbing.

If a media outlet can keep you fighting about Pride Month, maybe you will not notice what your county commissioners just approved.

If a party can keep you angry at your neighbor, maybe you will not ask why nobody is protecting your land, your wallet, your water, or your future.

This is not just a left-wing problem.

This is not just a right-wing problem.

This is a political machine problem.

Both sides know how to use outrage.

Both sides know how to raise money from fear.

Both sides know how to turn people into engagement.

Both sides know how to make voters feel informed while keeping them distracted from the decisions that actually govern their lives.

Culture Issues Matter, But They Cannot Be All We Care About

I am not saying cultural issues do not matter.

They do.

Marriage rights matter.

Religious liberty matters.

Parental rights matter.

Free speech matters.

The safety of children matters.

The dignity of gay Americans matters.

The difference between adult freedom and public indecency matters.

The difference between biological reality and ideological coercion matters.

All of that matters.

But if culture war is all we care about, then we are being played.

If every conversation becomes Pride, trans issues, bathrooms, drag shows, flags, and outrage, while water, power, land, taxes, and infrastructure get ignored, then we have allowed the political class to train us like circus animals.

Ring the bell.

Wave the flag.

Drop the buzzword.

Watch everyone fight.

Meanwhile, the real decisions move forward with barely any resistance.

That is not citizenship.

That is manipulation.

Why This Hits Me Personally

I know what it is like to be used as a political talking point.

I am a gay conservative.

I founded Gays for Trump.

I have spent years trying to tell people that gay does not automatically mean Democrat, woke, radical, anti-Christian, anti-family, or anti-American.

I have also watched parts of the Republican movement become increasingly comfortable using gay people as punching bags again.

I have watched people who once said they supported freedom suddenly decide that freedom stops at people like me.

I have watched politicians claim they are fighting radical gender ideology while casually sliding into attacks on gay Americans, gay marriage, and gay families.

I have watched people call us groomers, pedophiles, filth, degenerates, and threats to society.

And then I have watched some of those same people turn around and claim they are the serious ones focused on real issues.

No.

You cannot build a serious movement on lazy hate.

You cannot claim to defend liberty while cheering when government strips liberty from people you dislike.

You cannot claim to care about families while ignoring the cost of living, power bills, taxes, infrastructure, farms, and the future of the communities those families live in.

That is why this conversation matters.

Outrage Is Not Citizenship

The Go Right with Peter Boykin Perspective

The real issue is not that people talk about Pride. The real issue is that people only seem to care when the topic gives them permission to be angry. That is not healthy, conservative, Christian, or civically responsible. That is addiction to outrage, and it is exactly what politicians, media outlets, influencers, and social media algorithms know how to exploit.

We need to grow up as citizens. We need to be able to talk about gay rights without losing our minds. We need to be able to talk about transgender issues separately and seriously without using them as an excuse to attack every gay person in America. We need to be able to criticize Pride when it goes too far without pretending gay Americans are the enemy. We need to be able to defend children without using children as a political shield for bigotry. We need to be able to defend religious liberty without turning religion into a weapon against equal citizenship.

We also need to care just as much about water, power, land, taxes, infrastructure, farms, jobs, and local accountability as we care about whatever culture war topic is trending online. The loudest issues are not always the most important ones. The most viral arguments are not always the ones that will shape your future. The decisions that change your daily life are often quiet, technical, local, and boring until the bill comes due.

By then, it is too late to comment. It is too late to object. It is too late to ask questions. It is too late to demand transparency. That is why citizens have to pay attention before the deal is done, before the land is rezoned, before the water is promised, before the grid is strained, and before the cost is quietly passed down to the people who were too distracted to notice.

So yes, I will talk about Pride. I will talk about gay rights. I will talk about the objections people have to LGBT Americans. I will talk about what is normal, what is moral, what is fair, what is constitutional, and what is simply none of the government’s business. But I am also going to keep talking about data centers, water, power, farmland, taxes, roads, budgets, and the future of North Carolina.

Because if we only show up for outrage, then outrage is all politicians and media will keep feeding us. And if we keep ignoring the issues that actually affect every household, we should not be surprised when those decisions are made without us.

Controversial topics get the clicks. Pride, bathrooms, flags, and culture war outrage light up the comments every time.

But when the issue is water, farmland, power, taxes, data centers, roads, and the future of North Carolina communities, suddenly people go quiet.

That is the problem.

Culture issues matter, but if outrage is the only thing we show up for, outrage is all politicians and media will keep feeding us.
