For the first time, noncitizens, including illegal aliens, were permitted to vote in local Washington D.C. elections. This unprecedented move has sparked considerable debate about the implications for our Constitutional Republic and the integrity of our democracy.
Earlier this week, Washington D.C. held elections for City Council, marking the first instance where noncitizens participated in the voting process. The district registered over 500 illegal aliens as new voters, a development facilitated by the Local Resident Voting Rights Act, passed in 2022. This act permits noncitizens to vote in local elections if they can prove residency in the district for at least 30 days and meet age and competency requirements.
However, this new policy raises significant legal questions. The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, enacted by Congress and signed by then-President Bill Clinton, explicitly prohibits noncitizens from voting in both state and federal elections. The allowance of noncitizen voting in D.C.’s local elections appears to skirt this federal law, prompting concerns about potential legal and constitutional conflicts.
According to the Washington Post, the party affiliations of these newly registered noncitizen voters are as follows:
310 registered as Democrats
169 registered as Independents
28 registered as Republicans
16 registered for the Green Party
The participation of noncitizens in local elections has broader implications. Rep. Chip Roy voiced a prevalent concern among conservative circles: “[Democrats] want us to believe that it’s going to stop there, and that none of them are going to try — or be encouraged — to illegally vote in federal elections? Give me a break.” This sentiment reflects a fear that the inclusion of noncitizens in the local electoral process could potentially extend to federal elections, undermining the sanctity of our Constitutional Republic and democratic processes.
This development is controversial and polarizing, particularly among those who uphold a strict interpretation of our Constitution and the rule of law. The allowance of noncitizen voting in local elections in Washington D.C. may set a precedent with far-reaching consequences for our nation’s electoral integrity and the principles of citizenship that underpin our Constitutional Republic.
Note: The quoted statement from Rep. Chip Roy is an expression of opinion, emphasizing the viewpoint that the policy could lead to illegal voting in federal elections, a perspective widely held among conservative commentators and policymakers.
