The Bill Washington Keeps Sending to America

The federal government has recorded another massive budget deficit, and the numbers should concern every American taxpayer.

According to newly released Treasury Department figures, Washington spent nearly $2 trillion more than it collected during fiscal year 2026, marking the largest annual deficit in five years.

The shortfall increased by approximately $217 billion compared with the previous fiscal year, even as federal revenue reached an all-time high.

President Donald Trump has promised economic growth, government efficiency, and greater fiscal responsibility. But the latest numbers demonstrate that Washington’s spending problem remains unresolved.

The question is no longer whether America can afford to ignore its national debt. It is how much longer taxpayers can afford Washington ignoring it. Reuters

Record Revenue. Even Bigger Spending.

The Treasury Department reported approximately $5.40 trillion in federal revenue against $7.40 trillion in spending.

Revenue increased by 3%, but spending grew by 6%.

That produced a $1.99 trillion deficit, approximately 6.2% of the nation’s gross domestic product.

The Congressional Budget Office independently estimated a similar shortfall, confirming that spending growth exceeded revenue growth. Congressional Budget Office

One of the biggest concerns is the growing cost of servicing America’s national debt.

Federal debt-service outlays reached a record $1.36 trillion, increasing approximately 12% from the previous year.

The national debt has also surpassed $40 trillion.

That means an increasing portion of federal resources is being consumed by obligations accumulated under previous administrations and Congresses.

Spending increases involving Social Security, Medicare, and national defense contributed to the deficit. Defense spending rose approximately 6% to $917 billion.

The administration also faced a significant revenue setback after the Supreme Court invalidated portions of its tariff program, resulting in approximately $145 billion in tariff refunds.

Net tariff revenue declined despite the administration’s efforts to use tariffs as a source of federal income.

These figures represent actual Treasury reporting, not political allegations.

However, the deficit cannot reasonably be attributed to one president alone. Federal budgets reflect previously enacted laws, longstanding entitlement commitments, congressional appropriations, economic conditions, and decisions made across multiple administrations. Reuters

The financial consequences extend beyond Washington.

Rising government borrowing costs can place additional pressure on financial markets and compete with private borrowers for available capital.

For families and small businesses in North Carolina, borrowing costs matter when financing homes, vehicles, equipment, and business expansion.

Not every increase in consumer interest rates is caused by federal deficits. Global bond markets, inflation expectations, and monetary policy also influence those costs.

Nevertheless, economists warn that persistent deficits and rising debt-service obligations create long-term financial risks.

The Trump administration maintains that stronger economic growth can improve the nation’s fiscal outlook.

Whether growth alone can substantially reduce the deficit remains uncertain. Reuters

I Support Trump. But Washington Needs to Balance the Books.

The Go Right with Peter Boykin Perspective

First of all, I support President Donald Trump. But I am here to deliver the news, not simply tell people what they want to hear.

And these numbers deserve serious attention.

I support Trump’s efforts to strengthen American industry, reduce unnecessary regulations, protect American workers, and encourage economic growth.

But being a Constitutionalist for Liberty means recognizing that fiscal responsibility matters regardless of which political party controls Washington.

A Republican deficit is still a deficit. A Democratic deficit is still a deficit. And taxpayers are responsible for paying the bill either way.

For years, Republicans have campaigned on reducing government spending and controlling the national debt.

Those promises must mean something when Republicans hold power.

The same standard applies to Democrats, who have also supported spending programs without consistently addressing their long-term costs.

I believe government has legitimate responsibilities.

We need national defense, infrastructure, public safety, and essential services.

We also have obligations to Americans who paid into programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

But those responsibilities do not eliminate the need for financial discipline.

Washington cannot simply promise everything, borrow the difference, and expect future generations to handle the consequences.

I support economic growth and responsible tax relief.

But tax policy must be accompanied by realistic spending priorities.

Congress should examine waste, duplication, inefficient programs, and unnecessary expenditures while protecting legitimate government responsibilities.

We also need honest discussions about the long-term financing of major federal programs.

Those conversations will not always be politically popular.

But refusing to have them does not make the financial problem disappear.

Limited government means more than limiting regulations. It also means limiting government’s appetite for spending money it does not have.

The Constitution gives Congress significant authority over federal spending and taxation.

With that authority comes responsibility.

I want President Trump to succeed.

I also want Congress to stop treating the national debt like somebody else’s problem.

Because eventually, that somebody else is the American taxpayer.

The Debt Doesn’t Care Who Wins Elections

America’s fiscal challenges are not theoretical.

The federal government is spending substantially more than it collects, debt-service costs are climbing, and the national debt continues growing.

The next developments to watch include congressional budget negotiations, potential spending reforms, and whether the administration presents a credible plan for reducing annual deficits.

The upcoming congressional elections will also determine which lawmakers have responsibility for addressing these problems.

Neither political party should receive a blank check.

Grow the economy. Protect essential services. Eliminate waste. Demand accountability. And stop passing the bill to future generations.

Supporting President Trump does not require pretending every economic indicator is positive.

Supporting constitutional government requires demanding accountability even from the leaders we support.

Because fiscal responsibility isn’t a Republican or Democratic issue. It’s an American responsibility.

We don’t just go right. We go constitutionally right.

That’s how we #GoRight.

America’s federal deficit has climbed to nearly $2 trillion, even as government revenue reaches record levels. With the national debt exceeding $40 trillion and debt-service costs reaching new highs, Peter Boykin examines why supporting President Trump and demanding fiscal responsibility must go hand in hand. Washington cannot keep spending tomorrow’s money without consequences for today’s taxpayers.
