When the Government Forgets Who It’s Supposed to Protect
Let’s take a moment and rewind the story of America’s immigration system—not to point fingers, but to understand how we got here.
For decades, the United States has struggled to strike the right balance between national security and compassionate immigration. President Donald J. Trump said it loud and clear from day one: “A nation without borders is not a nation.” His stance was unapologetic—we needed a wall, we needed enforcement, and we needed a government that puts American citizens first. And he was right.
But we can’t ignore how the administrations before him failed to take this seriously.
The Obama-Biden administration allowed the border crisis to fester with weak enforcement and empty rhetoric. President George W. Bush? He may have turned a blind eye, more focused on foreign wars than protecting our own homeland. And going even further back—yes, Ronald Reagan did sign off on amnesty in the 1980s, and while it was a noble gesture at the time, the truth is we never closed the door afterward. The flow of illegal immigration never stopped, and we never got the enforcement we were promised.
Let me be clear: I am not against immigration. America is a nation built by immigrants—legal immigrants—and I believe strongly in that tradition. What I am against is lawlessness, open borders, and bureaucratic chaos that endangers citizens and immigrants alike.
We need to get back to case-by-case immigration, the kind that once defined Ellis Island. When people came here, they were processed, documented, and vetted. There was structure. There was a system.
And yes, there are legitimate cases for asylum today—such as LGBTQ individuals fleeing persecution in countries like Hungary and elsewhere. America should still be a safe haven for those who truly need it, but that safety must come through legal channels and verified processes, not broken apps or haphazard policies.
We don’t need a border that’s wide open—we need a border that works. One that keeps out criminals but welcomes those who want to build a better life, legally, respectfully, and with a desire to become part of the American family.
Which brings us to a recent story that should alarm every citizen—because the very system that’s supposed to protect Americans is now threatening them with deportation.
An Alarming Mistake That Could Happen to You
Nicole Micheroni, a 40-year-old U.S. citizen and immigration attorney from Massachusetts, recently found herself the target of a jaw-dropping act of government incompetence—and possibly overreach.
She received an email from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), more specifically from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), that stated her “parole status” had been canceled. The email told her she was “subject to potential law enforcement actions that will result in your removal from the United States,” and encouraged her to “leave immediately on your own.”
Let’s be clear: Nicole Micheroni is not an immigrant. She is a natural-born American citizen.
At first, she assumed the threatening notice must have been meant for one of her clients. After all, as an immigration attorney, she deals with such communications regularly. But when she checked the details, she was shocked to realize that the email was addressed directly to her.
Government Shrugs While Trust Crumbles
After Micheroni went public with her story on social media, DHS was forced to respond. Their explanation? The agency uses contact information provided by immigrants—and sometimes, due to mismatches, notices end up being sent to the wrong people. Including, apparently, U.S. citizens.
A high-ranking DHS official admitted the error and said, “CBP is monitoring communications and will address any issues on a case-by-case basis.”
Let that sink in. A government agency tasked with protecting our Constitutional Republic told a born-and-raised American citizen to self-deport— and they wrote it off as a mistake in a database.
This happened while legal battles are heating up over the Biden administration’s attempts to unwind Trump-era immigration policies. One particular legal battle blocked the deportation of over 500,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, many of whom had entered through the CBP One app—an app intended to allow migrants to legally schedule border appointments.
Micheroni believes this email was more than a mistake—it was a message:
> “I think it’s a scare tactic. I think they want people afraid of immigration,” she told reporters.
Whether it was intentional or not, the emotional and legal impact of such a threatening email can be devastating. Imagine how many others might have received similar notices and stayed silent out of fear or confusion.
When Systems Fail the People They Were Built to Protect
What happened to Micheroni is a clear sign of deeper systemic failure inside DHS and CBP. This wasn’t a simple typo. This was a legally binding warning issued by a powerful federal agency to a law-abiding citizen who did nothing wrong.
Imagine if she hadn’t known her rights.
Imagine if she had panicked, packed up, and tried to “leave immediately.”
This incident isn’t just an accident. It’s a loud alarm bell. If the federal government can’t correctly identify its own citizens, how can it possibly be trusted to manage one of the most complex issues facing our nation—immigration?
We already live in a climate where questioning authority can get you labeled. Now we’re entering territory where the government can send threatening letters to citizens—and then wave it off as “just a glitch.”

Let me speak directly to you—not as a commentator, but as a citizen of this Constitutional Republic.
Our immigration system is broken. Completely. And while many are focused on reform, I say we need a pause. A 25-year moratorium on all new immigration unless under the strictest exceptions. Some say 10 years—frankly, that’s a band-aid on a bullet wound.
Before we can fix the flood, we need to stop the leak. Donald Trump did an excellent job at slowing the tidal wave, but now we need to do even more.
We must deport those who pose a threat or drain our resources. But I also believe we must show discernment. Those who’ve come here, built lives, paid taxes, obeyed laws—they deserve a pathway to stability, even if not full citizenship. Let them earn their place.
And here’s a bold idea:
Put able-bodied immigrants—especially younger men—to work in our National Guard or on critical infrastructure projects.
Why not? Immigrants helped build this nation once before. Let them prove they belong, not just by showing up—but by showing up to build.
And let me be crystal clear to our elected officials:
You serve the American citizen. Not foreign nationals. Not unlawful entrants. Not global interests.
If you’re prioritizing non-citizens over those who put you in office, you’re betraying your oath and your people.
We don’t hate immigrants—we love our country. And we demand that those who come here love it too.
