When Evictions Rise and Costs Explode, Why Are We Still Arguing About Noise Instead of Survival?
A notice taped to a door does not care about trending topics.
Across Alamance County and North Carolina, the real stress people feel is not about whatever culture war clip is circulating online. It is about rent going up again. Property taxes climbing. Groceries costing more. And the growing fear that one bad month can turn into an eviction filing that follows you for years.
Local reporting has been clear. Evictions across North Carolina have surged to their highest level in more than a decade. Housing costs have risen sharply while wages lag behind. In counties like Alamance, nearly half of renters are considered cost burdened, meaning they are paying 30 percent or more of their income just to keep a roof over their heads.
That is not an abstract policy debate. That is daily anxiety.
At the same time, homeowners are feeling the squeeze from another direction. Property tax increases, higher insurance costs, and rising assessments have left many residents feeling like stability is slipping even if they did everything “right.” Seniors on fixed incomes, working families, and small landlords alike are all getting hit by the same economic reality from different angles.
Yet when you scroll social media or watch national cable news, you would think these issues barely exist.
The Gap Between Online Noise and Local Reality
Social issues dominate online because outrage is easy to manufacture and cheap to distribute. A clip goes viral. A hashtag trends. Engagement spikes.
But none of that pays rent.
Housing insecurity, evictions, and cost of living pressures do not trend well. They require local knowledge, boring budget meetings, and long-term planning. They demand leadership that understands how county policy, zoning, taxes, courts, and social services intersect in real life.
This is where local elections matter more than people realize.
How Low Turnout Elections Quietly Shape Big Power
Many voters underestimate how much influence starts at the smallest level of government.
Take towns like Haw River. Local races there often see extremely low turnout. A handful of votes can determine who sits on a town council or holds a mayoral seat.
That might seem minor. It is not.
Those positions become résumés. They become steppingstones. Later, those same individuals can be appointed or elected to far more powerful roles, including countywide positions like county commissioner.
The jump from representing a small town to shaping policy for all of Alamance County is massive. County commissioners influence budgets, taxes, school funding, emergency services, housing policy, and how aggressively evictions and enforcement mechanisms are handled.
And sometimes that leap happens with very little public scrutiny because, so few people participated at the earlier stage.
Low turnout elections do not mean low impact outcomes. They mean decisions are made by a very small slice of the population that will eventually affect everyone.
Why Effective Leadership Is Not Optional Right Now
When evictions are rising and affordability is collapsing, leadership is no longer theoretical.
Effective local leaders ask hard questions:
- Are tax increases truly unavoidable, and if so, are they paired with transparency and accountability?
- Are housing policies increasing supply at prices working families can afford, or are they quietly favoring development that prices people out?
- Are courts and legal processes balanced, or is the system tilted so heavily that one missed paycheck becomes permanent housing instability?
- Are county resources being used to prevent eviction before it happens, which is far cheaper and more humane than dealing with homelessness after the fact?
These are not partisan questions. They are survival questions.
Your Vote Is Not Symbolic. It Is Structural.
Every local election is a foundation stone. School boards, town councils, mayors, and commissioners shape the environment long before national politics ever touches it.
When turnout is low, leadership is chosen by default. When voters disengage, influence concentrates in the hands of a few. And when those leaders later gain broader authority, the consequences ripple across the entire county.
That is why voting in small local elections matters just as much, and often more, than voting in high profile national races.
You do not feel Washington in your rent payment. You feel county policy. You feel municipal taxes. You feel zoning decisions. You feel court procedures. You feel who was paying attention when the warning signs started flashing.

If We Ignore Local Elections, Are We Voting Ourselves into Instability?
#GoRight with Peter Boykin Commentary
There is a hard truth nobody wants to say out loud. Most people are not being failed by politics they are being failed by neglect of the closest layer of power to their lives.
Evictions do not happen because of a speech in Washington. Property taxes do not rise because of a viral clip on social media. Rent does not jump because of a trending argument on cable news. Those pressures are shaped locally, quietly, through decisions most people never show up to vote on.
When evictions rise to record levels, that is not noise. That is policy meeting reality. When housing costs climb faster than wages, that is not ideological. That is arithmetic. When families are one missed paycheck away from court, that is not culture war. That is instability taking root.
And yet, many of the elections that determine these outcomes barely register on the public radar.
Small town elections in places like Haw River can be decided by a few dozen votes. Town council seats, mayoral roles, local boards are often filled by default because turnout is so low. People assume those positions do not matter. They assume the real power comes later.
But here is what actually happens.
Those small offices become credentials. They become pathways. The person elected by a tiny fraction of voters today can later be appointed or elected to a countywide role that controls budgets, taxes, housing policy, courts, and services for everyone. The scale of influence explodes, but the original mandate was microscopic.
That is how instability is built. Not through malicious intent, but through disengagement.
When voters skip local elections, they surrender the most direct leverage they have over real-life outcomes. They allow leadership to be shaped without scrutiny. They allow priorities to drift away from affordability, stability, and accountability.
Then people wake up confused. Why are taxes rising without clear explanations. Why are eviction filings accelerating. Why does it feel like nobody is listening.
The answer is uncomfortable but simple. Too many people checked out when it mattered most.
Effective leadership does not appear by accident. It is chosen early, locally, and deliberately. Leaders who understand that housing stability is public safety. That preventing eviction is cheaper than cleaning up homelessness. That transparency in taxes builds trust. That budgets are moral documents whether politicians admit it or not.
Ignoring those choices does not keep you neutral. It places you on autopilot while others steer.
The loudest voices online want you distracted. They want you arguing about symbols instead of systems. Because systems require effort to understand. Systems require showing up to boring meetings. Systems require voting when the cameras are not rolling.
If we want communities that are stable, affordable, and livable, the path does not start with outrage. It starts with participation. Especially in the elections that seem too small to matter.
Because those elections decide who eventually holds the power that affects everyone.
Ignoring local elections is not harmless. It is how instability becomes normal.

Evictions are rising across Alamance County and North Carolina while housing costs and property taxes continue to squeeze working families, renters, and seniors. This article cuts through the online noise to focus on the real issues people live with every day and explains why local elections, even low turnout town races, can quietly shape countywide power and long-term stability. If voters ignore local leadership, are we voting ourselves into instability?
