What happens when a president wants to move forward, but Congress stands in the way?
President Donald Trump is reportedly preparing a backup plan if Democrats take control of Congress. But there’s a constitutional question bigger than Trump, bigger than Republicans, and bigger than Democrats.
Can a president govern with the stroke of a pen when Congress refuses to cooperate?
And what happens when the political party you support begins pushing the very boundaries of government power you’ve always argued should be limited?
FIRST OF ALL, I SUPPORT TRUMP. But I am here to deliver the news.
I’m Peter Boykin, the Constitutionalist for Liberty, and this is The Go Right with Peter Boykin Perspective.
Because the president’s pen is powerful, but it is not a Congress.

When Presidential Power Meets the Constitution
Today’s reporting raises an important constitutional question.
What happens when a president wants to advance his agenda, but Congress refuses to cooperate?
According to Reuters, the Trump administration is already preparing for that possibility.
I understand why.
I support President Trump’s efforts to secure our borders, strengthen American manufacturing, reduce unnecessary regulations, and put American citizens first.
I also understand that Washington can become paralyzed by partisan politics.
But supporting a president does not mean believing presidential authority should be unlimited.
The Constitution created three branches of government for a reason.
Congress makes laws.
The president executes those laws.
And the judiciary interprets the law and determines whether government actions comply with the Constitution.
Those responsibilities sometimes overlap, but they are not interchangeable.
A president has legitimate executive authority.
He can direct federal agencies, enforce existing laws, negotiate within statutory authority, and exercise powers granted by the Constitution.
But an executive order cannot simply replace legislation whenever Congress becomes inconvenient.
That standard must apply equally to Republicans and Democrats.
I criticized executive overreach under Democratic administrations.
I would be inconsistent if I ignored the same constitutional questions simply because I support President Trump.

Congress Has Responsibilities Too
At the same time, Democrats should not assume that winning Congress gives them unlimited authority to obstruct everything the president does.
Congress has oversight responsibilities.
It also has a responsibility to govern.
Investigations should pursue legitimate questions and documented evidence, not become endless political theater.
And Republicans must recognize something else.
If voters give Democrats control of Congress, that result must be respected.
The American people have the constitutional right to change their representatives.
Political power is not something any party permanently owns.
I want Republicans to retain Congress.
I want Trump’s policies to succeed.
But I want those policies to succeed through constitutional government.
Not through an endless competition to discover which branch can stretch its authority the farthest.

The Danger of Unlimited Government Power
We should remember why separation of powers matters.
A government powerful enough to bypass constitutional restrictions for policies we support is also powerful enough to bypass them for policies we oppose.
And that’s the danger of abandoning consistent principles.
Imagine giving one president unlimited authority because you agree with his policies.
Now imagine that same authority in the hands of a president you strongly oppose.
Would you still defend it?
That’s the question every American should consider before demanding that any president receive more power.
The Constitution wasn’t written to make government convenient.
It was written to establish a government powerful enough to function, but limited enough to protect individual liberty.
The president’s pen is powerful. But it is not a Congress.
And Congress itself is not above the Constitution.

We the People Must Come First
The American people deserve a government that can deliver results without treating constitutional limitations as obstacles to be defeated.
Win elections.
Pass legislation.
Enforce the law.
Respect the courts.
And remain accountable to the people.
I support strong borders, American energy independence, responsible spending, individual liberty, and peace through strength.
I want Republicans to deliver on those principles.
But I also want them to remember that constitutional conservatism means respecting the Constitution even when it limits something we want government to accomplish.
Because the Constitution does not belong to the Republican Party or the Democratic Party.
It belongs to We the People.
And that brings us back to the real issue.
This isn’t just about Donald Trump or the next Congress.
It’s about the kind of government we leave behind.
A government that respects the Constitution, protects individual liberty, and remembers that no elected official stands above the law.
Support the president. Hold Congress accountable. Defend the Constitution.
Because political parties come and go. Presidents serve their terms. Congressional majorities change.
But our Constitutional Republic must endure.
And no matter who controls Washington, our elected officials must remember one fundamental truth.
They work for us. We do not work for them.
I’m Peter Boykin, the Constitutionalist for Liberty.

Because freedom doesn’t survive when we stop defending the principles that protect it.
