The Go Right with Peter Boykin Perspective
By Peter Boykin | Constitutionalist for Liberty

Two Names, One Election, and a Whole Lot of Questions
Imagine walking into a voting booth and seeing two candidates with almost the exact same name running for the same United States Senate seat.
Now imagine discovering that political operatives may have deliberately helped recruit one of those candidates, hoping voters would confuse the two.
Sounds like something out of a political comedy, doesn’t it?
Except this is an actual controversy unfolding in Alaska, just days before Election Day.
Reports indicate that operatives aligned with Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola helped recruit another Dan Sullivan to run against Republican incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan.
The allegations have triggered investigations and demands for accountability. Peltola denies knowing about the recruitment effort.
But here’s my question.
When does political strategy cross the line from clever campaigning into deliberate voter deception?
FIRST OF ALL, I SUPPORT TRUMP. But I am here to deliver the news.
I’m Peter Boykin, the Constitutionalist for Liberty, and this is The Go Right with Peter Boykin Perspective.
Because elections should be decided by voters, not by political operatives trying to turn the ballot into a board game.

The Ballot Belongs to the Voter
Let’s start with the facts.
Alaska’s Senate ballot includes Republican incumbent Dan S. Sullivan and another candidate, Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., a retired teacher running as an unaffiliated candidate.
A New York Times investigation reported that political operatives aligned with Mary Peltola sought to recruit candidates who could potentially draw support away from the incumbent.
The reporting included allegations that campaign staff and other Democratic operatives were involved.
Peltola and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee deny involvement.
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has ordered an investigation into whether any election laws were violated.
That investigation matters.
But so does the presumption of innocence.
No court has established that Peltola committed election fraud or that the candidacy itself constituted a crime.
And that distinction should matter to everyone who believes in the rule of law.

Political Games Have Real Consequences
I understand political strategy.
Candidates recruit supporters, organize campaigns, encourage people to run for office, and attempt to gain every lawful advantage.
That’s politics.
But deliberately creating confusion among voters, if that is what occurred, is something entirely different.
We’re talking about the United States Senate.
We’re talking about representation, public policy, federal spending, constitutional rights, and the direction of our country.
Those decisions should not depend on whether someone accidentally checks the wrong name.
Now, Alaska uses ranked-choice voting, which can reduce some of the impact of competing candidates with similar names.
But that doesn’t eliminate every concern.
Voters deserve to know who is running, what those candidates believe, and who might be supporting their campaigns.
An election should be a competition of ideas, not a contest to see who can confuse the most people.

Accountability Must Apply to Both Parties
President Trump has called for criminal consequences over the allegations.
I understand his frustration.
I support investigating credible evidence of election misconduct.
But I also believe that demanding prosecution is different from proving a crime occurred.
If investigators uncover unlawful coordination, fraudulent representations, or violations of election law, then prosecutors should follow the evidence.
If the conduct was legal, even if politically questionable, then the public can judge the people responsible.
The government cannot invent a crime simply because a political strategy appears dishonest.
And Republicans should remember something important.
If Republican operatives engaged in the same behavior, I would expect the same level of scrutiny.
Constitutional principles do not change with party affiliation.
I want Republicans to win elections because their policies offer Americans a better future.
Not because Democrats were confused.
Not because Republicans were confused.
And certainly not because political consultants believed manipulating voter choices was more important than earning public trust.

The Constitution Is Not a Campaign Strategy
There is another issue here.
State election officials have the responsibility to administer elections according to the law.
Federal authorities also have legitimate responsibilities involving federal election protections.
But neither the state nor federal government possesses unlimited power to determine election outcomes.
Investigations must follow the law.
Courts must apply the law.
And eligible voters must have their ballots counted according to lawful procedures.
We cannot defend election integrity by disregarding constitutional protections whenever our preferred candidate might lose.
That defeats the entire purpose.
Political parties come and go.
Senate majorities change.
Presidents serve their terms.
But the legitimacy of elections must survive all of them.

The Ballot Is Not a Board Game
At the end of the day, this controversy is bigger than two candidates named Dan Sullivan.
It is about whether Americans can trust the people competing for political power.
The voters deserve honest campaigns, accurate ballots, and transparent investigations.
If someone violated election law, hold them accountable.
If no crime occurred, don’t manufacture one for political advantage.
And if a campaign used legally permissible but deliberately confusing tactics, voters have every right to hold that campaign politically accountable.
The ballot belongs to the voter. Not the consultant. Not the party establishment. Not the president.
