AMNESTY IN THE LAME DUCK
Democrats plan to use their final days of control in the House to try and ram through amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants currently living in the United States.
The details: In December, Democrats will try to pass a bill to give U.S. citizenship to millions of illegals living in the U.S. under the Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals [DACA] Program.
DACA was the Obama-era program that gave protection to illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children – often referred to as the ‘Dreamers’.
There are currently 1.9 million ‘Dreamers’ in the U.S.
Back up: Remember, President Trump offered a pathway to citizenship for the ‘Dreamers’ under the condition that we build a full border wall and strengthen border security in order to prevent amnesty from incentivizing more illegal immigration.
But Democrats turned it down.
Sen. Chuck Schumer shared his plans during a press conference:
“The only way we’re going to have a great future in America is if we welcome and embrace immigrants, the dreamers and all of them, because our ultimate goal is to help the dreamers, but get a path to citizenship for all 11 million or however many undocumented there are here.”
…In Schumer’s own words, the real goal is to give citizenship to every single illegal immigrant living in the U.S. – not just the ‘Dreamers’.
However, the 11 million figure he cites is outdated from 2005. That number is probably closer to 35 million today.
Can Democrats get this done? Probably not.
While they have control of the House [until January], they still need 10 Republican votes in the Senate.
According to Democrat Sen. Dick Durban, there are currently 4-5 Republicans who are open to voting for the bill.
Big picture: Democrats need new voters. Despite underperformance in the midterms, Republicans have been growing their voter base and increasingly pulling minority voters into the coalition. Democrats don’t care about citizenship for illegals. They want 30+ million new voters.
