Political media has learned that the fastest way to create outrage is to remove the sentence surrounding the sentence.

A quotation is cut down. The subject is changed. A reference to violent extremists becomes a reference to millions of ordinary voters. The rewritten version travels farther than the original because it is shorter, angrier, and easier to share.

That happened when remarks by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller were presented as though he had declared liberal Americans to be a “fatal cancer.”

Misquoting political opponents may feel satisfying, but it weakens the argument against them.

Once the original context appears, the discussion shifts away from the underlying policy and toward the inaccurate presentation.

That gives the speaker an easy defense.

Instead of answering legitimate concerns about government power, divisive rhetoric, or the definition of political terrorism, the official can simply point to the distortion and declare the entire criticism dishonest.

Accurate criticism is harder to escape.

It forces officials to defend their real words, actual policies, and documented conduct.
