DISNEY BOWS TO CHINA AND CENSORS THE SIMPSONS
Disney removed an episode of The Simpsons from its streaming service in Hong Kong because it was critical of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) – a sign of two things:
Disney would rather censor its content than upset the communists.
China is tightening its grip on Hong Kong.
During the pandemic, China banned most of Disney’s content and only recently started loosening its restrictions.
The episode that was taken down is titled ‘One Angry Lisa’ and originally aired in October 2022. In the episode, the show’s matriarch, Marge is using a Peloton-like bike to take a virtual exercise class on the Great Wall of China.
The instructor says: “Behold the wonders of China: Bitcoin mines, forced labor camps where children make smartphones.”
In 2020, China tightened its grip on the once fairly free and open island by passing a new ‘National Security Law’ which undermined civil liberties, freedom of speech, and the autonomy of Hong Kong.
A source told Axios that Disney feared airing this episode would have put them at odds with the law.
However, according to Kenny Ng, associate professor at the Academy of Film at Hong Kong Baptist University, the island’s film censorship program, which was enacted in 2021, “does not apply to streaming services.”
This isn’t the first time Disney bowed to China:
Disney pulled another Simpsons episode that referenced Tiananmen Square, where the CCP had the army kill protestors – an event China has eliminated from its history books.
Disney filmed its recent live-action remake of ‘Mulan’ in China’s Xinjiang province, where Muslim Uyghurs are effectively slaves.
