Google faced a backlash for its Gemini AI chatbot as users exposed its image generation tool for promoting blatant racism against white individuals, resulting in the tech giant pulling the controversial tool offline.
What’s ‘Gemini’? Think of it as Google’s twist on ChatGPT, utilizing artificial intelligence to craft human-like prompts for tasks ranging from essay writing to web code and, most recently, image generation.
Racial bias unveiled: In the past week, social media became a battleground as users shared instances of the image generation tool depicting historical figures with a distinct anti-white bias. Notable examples included portraying the Founding Fathers as black, Vikings as black and Asian, and even imagining the Pope as a black man and an Indian woman. Google’s response was swift, acknowledging their misstep and taking down the image-generation tool.
Apology with a twist: While admitting their error, Google’s apology also hinted at a commitment to racial “equity,” citing a need to address historical imbalances in media representation that have favored white individuals. Their statement read, “Historically, media representation has overwhelmingly favored White individuals and their achievements… Focusing solely on White individuals in this context risks perpetuating that imbalance.”
In the broader context: The incident fuels existing concerns among conservatives and independents about Google’s left-wing and anti-white bias, a longstanding issue notably seen in its search tool. This latest controversy serves as a vivid manifestation of that bias.
