Internal Report Alleges Meta Exploits Vulnerabilities in Teens
According to an internal report, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, intentionally designed its social media platforms to capitalize on the vulnerabilities of young users. The report, dated 2020, highlights how Meta sought to exploit impulsive behavior, susceptibility to peer pressure, and the inability to assess risk in children.
The report paints a disturbing picture of Meta’s platforms, likening teenagers to exploitable drug addicts. It suggests that every time a teen user stumbles upon something unexpected, their brains are rewarded with a dopamine hit, creating a cycle of addiction.
In a recent lawsuit filed by a coalition of 41 states and the District of Columbia, the report was cited as evidence against Meta, further exposing their intentional actions. The lawsuit also revealed that there are up to 2.5 million underage accounts awaiting review by Meta, despite the platform prohibiting users under the age of 13.
Email correspondence from 2021 between Meta’s head of policy, Karina Newton, confirms that the app’s design was not suitable for younger age groups lacking cognitive and emotional skills. It seems Meta knowingly disregarded warnings from senior executives about the harm their platforms were causing to young users.
In response to the allegations, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg dismisses the claims, stating that the lawsuit misrepresents their work by selectively quoting and cherry-picking documents.
Interestingly, while other major advertisers like Disney and Apple have pulled their ads from certain platforms over unconfirmed reports of hate speech, they have yet to withdraw their advertisements from Meta’s platforms.
It is crucial to address the concerns raised by this report and the ongoing lawsuit to ensure the well-being and safety of young users in the digital realm.
