Is Britain Banning Cigarettes or Banning Adulthood?

A strange thing happened in a Bill Maher interview. A conversation about cigarettes turned into a much bigger argument about adulthood, freedom, and the modern government’s hunger to manage people long after childhood ends.

Maher looked at Britain’s new tobacco policy and asked the question that cuts through every polished public health slogan.

Do adults still get to make their own mistakes?

That is the question hanging over the United Kingdom’s Tobacco and Vapes Act, a law that creates what officials are calling a “smoke-free generation.” The policy makes it illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009. The UK government celebrated the measure as one of the most significant public health reforms in generations after the bill received Royal Assent in 2026. (GOV.UK)

That sounds clean when politicians say it. It sounds compassionate. It sounds like one of those government phrases written by a committee that wants control to feel like kindness.

But underneath the phrase is a serious liberty problem.

This is not simply a law saying that children cannot buy cigarettes. Most people already agree that minors should not be sold tobacco. The real issue is that this restriction follows an entire generation into adulthood. A person born after that cutoff can grow up, pay taxes, vote, get married, raise children, start a business, serve their nation, and still be told that buying a legal tobacco product is not allowed.

That is not just public health.

That is managed adulthood.

Welcome back to Go Right News, where we look at stories from the perspective of a Constitutionalist for Liberty and ask the question too many political elites would rather avoid.

Is government protecting citizens, or is government training citizens to accept control?

Did Britain Just Turn Adulthood into a Permission Slip?

Nobody should confuse this argument with a defense of cigarettes.

Smoking is destructive. Cigarettes kill people. Nicotine addiction has ruined lives, drained families, and filled hospitals. Tobacco companies spent decades selling a product that hooked people and then left society to deal with the consequences.

That truth matters.

Government has a legitimate role in warning people. Government has a legitimate role in stopping companies from targeting children. Government has a legitimate role in punishing retailers who sell tobacco to minors.

But there is a line between protecting children and permanently supervising adults.

That line is where liberty lives.

The UK law is designed so that the legal age for buying tobacco rises over time. Cancer Research UK explained the practical effect plainly, stating that the law will make it illegal to ever sell tobacco in the UK to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009. (Cancer Research UK – Cancer News)

That is the part that should make free people stop and think.

A government that says, “You are not old enough yet,” is one thing.

A government that says, “You will never be old enough,” is something else entirely.

The public health argument says this will save lives, reduce disease, protect future generations, and relieve pressure on the healthcare system. That argument deserves to be heard.

The liberty argument says adults cannot be treated like permanent children just because their choices carry risk. That argument also deserves to be heard.

The danger comes when government officials pretend only one side exists.

Is Public Health Becoming the New Language of Control?

The modern state rarely says, “We want more power.”

It says, “We want to help.”

It says, “We want to protect.”

It says, “We want to reduce harm.”

Sometimes that is sincere. Sometimes it is necessary. Sometimes public policy really does save lives.

But a Constitutional Republic is supposed to ask a harder question.

How much power should government be allowed to claim in the name of protecting people from themselves?

That question does not disappear just because the topic is unpopular. In fact, unpopular choices are where liberty gets tested.

Freedom is easy when everyone approves of the choice.

Freedom becomes real when the choice is messy, unhealthy, offensive, risky, or unpopular.

The cigarette bans matters because it creates a model that can be applied elsewhere. If government can say adults may never buy tobacco because it is harmful, what stops the same logic from expanding?

Sugar is harmful.

Alcohol is harmful.

Processed food is harmful.

Some speech is called harmful.

Certain political opinions are already labeled dangerous by activists, bureaucrats, and media institutions.

Once government gets comfortable saying adults cannot be trusted with one legal product, the temptation grows to apply that same thinking to other parts of life.

That is why this conversation is bigger than tobacco.

The issue is not whether cigarettes are good.

They are not.

The issue is whether bad habits justify permanent government control.

Can a Government Ban Cigarettes but Fail to Protect Its Citizens?

The Maher interview did not stay only on cigarettes. It moved into a broader question about Britain’s political and cultural direction.

Maher brought up reports that the United Arab Emirates had concerns about funding students to study in the UK because of radicalization fears. The Financial Times reported that the UAE restricted scholarships involving British universities, with concerns tied to Islamist radicalization and the Muslim Brotherhood. (Financial Times)

That claim should be handled carefully.

The UAE is not a perfect judge of Western liberty. It has its own political system, its own restrictions, and its own reasons for making decisions. Nobody should treat a foreign government’s scholarship policy as unquestionable proof of what is happening across every British campus.

But dismissing the concern as social media panic is too easy.

The deeper question remains.

Are Western universities educating students, or are some campuses becoming places where radical political and ideological movements can grow without serious accountability?

That question deserves more than a shrug.

Then Maher pointed to violence against Jews in Britain. That was not imaginary. Reuters reported that King Charles visited Golders Green in London after antisemitic attacks, including a stabbing incident and arson targeting community sites. Reuters also reported that a man appeared in court charged over the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green. (Reuters)

The Guardian reported that Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley warned that British Jews were “not currently safe” in London after a series of attacks. (The Guardian)

That should shake people.

A government that is bold enough to tell future adults they may never buy cigarettes should be bold enough to protect Jewish citizens from targeted violence.

A government that micromanages lifestyle choices should not become timid when real public safety is on the line.

That is one of the great failures of the modern managerial state.

It is often strongest against the compliant citizen.

It is often loudest when regulating the peaceful.

It is often most confident when lecturing ordinary people.

Then, when violence, extremism, antisemitism, or public disorder demands moral clarity, everything suddenly becomes complicated.

Is America Watching Its Own Future Across the Ocean?

Americans should not look at Britain with arrogance.

We should look at Britain with caution.

The United States has the Constitution. Britain does not have the same written constitutional structure that we do. The American system was designed to restrain government, protect individual rights, and remind those in power that citizens are not property of the state.

But paper protections only matter when the people defend them.

Americans saw during COVID how quickly public health language can become a tool of control. People were censored, banned, mocked, pressured, deplatformed, and treated as dangerous for asking questions that later proved reasonable. The government, Big Tech, media institutions, and social pressure all moved in the same direction at the same time.

That experience should have taught us something.

Public health matters.

But public health does not erase liberty.

Emergency language does not suspend the Constitution forever.

Expert opinion does not replace individual rights.

And protecting people from risk does not give government the right to own their lives.

The warning from Britain is not that every public health rule is tyranny. That would be lazy.

The warning is that government power rarely shrinks on its own once the public gets used to being managed.

What Does This Mean for North Carolina?

This story has a special meaning in North Carolina.

North Carolina is a tobacco state. Our farms, families, workers, businesses, and communities have all been shaped by tobacco in one way or another. That does not mean we pretend smoking is harmless. It does not mean we ignore addiction. It does not mean we defend corporations that targeted people with destructive products.

It means we understand that laws have real consequences beyond political talking points.

When politicians regulate an industry, they are not just moving pieces on a spreadsheet. They are affecting farmers, local stores, workers, families, tax revenue, rural communities, and personal choice.

In Alamance County and across North Carolina, the better path is not to treat adults like children.

The better path is honest education, strong families, parental involvement, enforcement against sales to minors, and a culture that teaches responsibility before government reaches for prohibition.

A free society cannot ban its way into virtue.

It cannot regulate its way into wisdom.

It cannot produce strong citizens by treating grown people like weak subjects.

Are We Protecting People or Shrinking Them?

Go Right with Peter Boykin, the Constitutionalist for Liberty Perspective.

The government should tell the truth about cigarettes.

The government should protect children from tobacco sales.

The government should hold bad corporate actors accountable.

But the government should not follow citizens into adulthood and tell them they will never be old enough to make a legal choice.

That is not freedom.

That is not responsibility.

That is supervised living.

A Constitutional Republic does not exist to create perfect people. It exists to protect free people. Free people need truth. They need consequences. They need warnings. They need accountability. But they also need room to choose, fail, learn, recover, and live as adults.

The state should not be your parent forever.

The state should not be your doctor forever.

The state should not be your priest, your speech monitor, your grocery police, your lifestyle manager, and your moral supervisor.

Bad choices do not automatically justify bigger government.

Cigarettes are bad.

Government control can be worse.

Both things can be true.

That is why this issue matters.

Britain may call this a smoke-free generation, but Americans should ask whether it is really a freedom-reduced generation.

Because once government decides that adulthood is not enough, every right becomes conditional.

And once every right becomes conditional, liberty becomes a privilege handed out by politicians.

That is not the American idea.

The American idea is louder, harder, messier, freer, and more demanding.

It expects citizens to be responsible.

It expects government to stay in its lane.

It expects liberty to survive even when people in power think they know better.

And if we lose that, we will not just lose the right to buy something unhealthy.

We will lose the principle that adults belong to themselves.
