On the 22nd anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Joe Biden made a questionable assertion by falsely claiming he was at Ground Zero the day after the tragic events.
The Claim: While addressing a military base in Anchorage, Alaska, Biden stated, “Ground Zero New York. I remember standing there the next day and looking at the building. It felt like I was looking through the gates of hell. It looked so devastating from where you could stand.”
The Reality: Contrary to Biden’s claim, he was not at Ground Zero on September 12. Instead, he was at the Capitol building, inside the Senate chamber, voting on a resolution to condemn the terrorist attacks. It wasn’t until September 20, over a week later, that he toured the devastation with a Senate delegation.
In a broader context, the choice of location for this falsehood, Alaska, raises questions. Joe Biden became the first president not to spend the day commemorating 9/11 in New York City, Washington D.C., or Pennsylvania—the three locations directly impacted by the attacks.
Pattern of Deception: Biden’s history is marked by a series of questionable claims and misrepresentations. Some examples include:
