Republican Mayra Flores flipped a deep blue Congressional seat in South Texas, in a race that was being looked at as an indicator of what’s to come in November.
Back up: This was a special election being held in Texas’ 34th District after Rep. Filemon Vela, a Democrat, stepped down earlier this year.
The box score: As it currently stands, Flores received 51% of the vote, and her Democrat challenger, Dan Sanchez received 43%.
Flores will become the first Mexican-born congresswoman to serve in the House. She moved to the U.S. when she was 6.
Bucking trends: Flores is the first Republican to win this seat since 1870. In Presidential races, Hillary Clinton won this area by 33%. Biden won it by 13%.
Why the shift? Open borders were a big political issue. Texas-34, which sits along the eastern-most part of the Texas/Mexico border, has been ravaged by the effects of Joe Biden’s border crisis.
Flores’ campaign strategy emphasized Biden’s border crisis and even highlighted her marriage to a Border Patrol agent.
Flores tweeted: “This historic win will bring back God to the halls of Congress! This win is for the people who were ignored for so long! This is a message that the establishment will no longer be tolerated! We have officially started the red wave!! #TX34 God, Family, Country”
Elon Musk, who is now a Texas resident tweeted:
“I voted for Mayra Flores – first time I ever voted Republican. Massive red wave in 2022.”
