You wouldn’t know it based on U.S. media reporting, but Russia issued its terms for withdrawing from Ukraine over the weekend. And it appears that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is listening.

I want to mention that in order to find this news, I had to turn France24, a global news outlet based in Paris. Because for whatever reason, U.S. media is more interested in continued conflict rather than peace. But I digress…

Russia’s demands: Over the weekend, Russia issued four demands and said it would halt military action if they were met:

Cease military action
Enshrine geopolitical neutrality in its constitution
Acknowledge Crimea as Russian territory
Recognize the separatist regions of Donetsk and Lugansk as independent states

Zelensky’s response: To be clear, there has been no official direct response from President Zelensky. But he has made some indirect moves to suggest he’s open to negotiating the terms.

Zelensky now says he is no longer pressing for NATO membership for Ukraine, which was one of Russia’s stated reasons for invading.

Zelensky said he is open to “compromise” on the status of two breakaway pro-Russian territories of Donetsk and Lugansk.

Zelensky has taken a more indifferent tone with the west in recent days, as it becomes clear that outside of economic sanctions, Western nations do not have the appetite for deeper engagement that could lead to full-scale war between Russia and NATO allies.

He told ABC News:
“I have cooled down regarding this question a long time ago after we understood that … NATO is not prepared to accept Ukraine.”

“The alliance is afraid of controversial things, and confrontation with Russia.”

At the same time, Zelensky did speak to the British Parliament yesterday, and reiterated his resilience and invoking Winston Churchill, he told them, “We will not give up, and we will not lose. We will fight til the end… We are looking for your help, for the help of the civilized countries.”
