Ray Epps Charged in Connection with J6 Capitol Incident
Ray Epps, a figure seen in videos encouraging Trump supporters to enter the U.S. Capitol on January 6, has recently been charged with a misdemeanor related to the events of that day.
Digging Deeper: Among right-wing circles, speculation abounds that Epps may have been an undercover operative for federal agents. In one video, recorded the night before January 6, Epps can be heard saying, “We need to go into the Capitol!” The crowd’s response, chanting “Fed! Fed! Fed!” raises questions.
The Charges: The Department of Justice (DOJ) has chosen to pursue a misdemeanor charge against Epps for disorderly or disruptive conduct on restricted grounds. Reports from NBC News suggest that Epps may be in discussions for a plea deal.
An Overflow of Informants: During closed-door testimony, former FBI assistant director Steven D’Antuono admitted that there were so many paid informants within the January 6 crowd that the agency lost count and had to conduct an audit to determine the full number.
A Tale of Two Sentences: The contrasting fates of individuals like Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, sentenced to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy on January 6, despite not being in D.C. that day, and Epps receiving a mild charge, raise eyebrows. This leads some to speculate, in their opinion, that Epps may have been collaborating with a compromised Department of Justice.
Taking a Step Back: Over 1,100 individuals have faced charges connected to January 6, with more than 650 having already entered guilty pleas.
