THE SCIENCE BEHIND WHY KIDS BEAT COVID

Since day one of the covid-19 pandemic, it’s been very clear that children are almost impervious to the virus – with most having mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.
Now scientists are starting to understand why…
In children, when covid enters the body, it triggers their innate immune system, a part of the immune system that isn’t as strong in adults.
Background: The human immune system has different lines of defense:
The innate immune system generates the body’s initial response against a virus.
The adaptive immune system is the learned response our immune system creates over time as it interacts with different viruses.
A medieval fortress analogy: Yale University professor of immunobiology and internal medicine, Kevan Herold compares the different functions to a medieval fortress.
Innate response: The mucus in your nose that traps harmful microbes is like a moat around a castle. And proteins and cells that trigger your body’s response are like cannonballs launched at the enemy.
Adaptive response: This is the response your body learns over time through experience with previous battles with viruses. It can remember weaknesses and apply them during future immune responses. These are like the soldiers.
Scientists found that children’s immune systems have higher levels of some innate molecules and increased innate responses compared with adults. Children also have higher levels of cytokines [small proteins that help communication between human cells] in their blood, which helps trigger the innate response.
Since children’s immune systems haven’t had the time to develop robust adaptive immune responses, they by default rely more on the innate response, which in the case of covid-19, is to their benefit.
Despite the science, Dr. Fauci continues to advocate for masking children, over the weekend saying:
“It’s understandable why people want to take masks off the kids. But, right now, given the level of activity that we have, it is risky.”
