In a move reflecting the changing dynamics of our Constitutional Republic, President Joe Biden and his Democratic allies have increasingly courted social media influencers, particularly those on the Chinese-owned app TikTok. This strategy aims to leverage the app’s popularity among young voters to bolster support for the 81-year-old incumbent. Yet, this effort has faced a significant backlash, particularly following the recent Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
Notably, Pew Research indicates that about one-third of adults under 30 receive their news from TikTok. Progressive influencers like Kahlil Greene, who command vast audiences, were initially seen as assets for Biden’s campaign. Instead, they have become vocal critics, contributing to a surge of anti-Biden sentiment on the platform.
CredoIQ, a firm that analyzes social media’s political impact, found that over 20% of top left-leaning TikTok influencers have shared anti-Biden content, garnering more than 100 million views in just the first four months of this year. Issues such as the Israel-Hamas war and the potential TikTok ban dominate these posts. Ben Darr, president and founder of CredoIQ, expressed concern over the situation, stating, “What I would be concerned about is kind of the wildfire anti-Biden movement leaping from anti-Biden progressives to a larger group of young people.”
This shift is reflected in national presidential polls, which show Biden nearly tied with Republican challenger Donald J. Trump among voters under 30. Despite Biden’s approval of a potential TikTok ban, his campaign continues to engage actively on the app. The National Pulse reported that Priorities USA, a Democrat-aligned SuperPAC, plans to spend $1 million to promote pro-Biden content by top influencers on TikTok.
While the facts presented show a clear trend, some interpretations, like the potential impact on future elections, remain speculative and opinion-based. This evolving dynamic highlights the complex interplay between social media influence and political strategies in our Constitutional Republic, underscoring the importance of safeguarding both democratic engagement and national security.
