A movement does not have to resemble a corporation to be real.

The Congressional Research Service has described the American Antifa movement as decentralized, consisting of independent groups and individuals sharing similar radical beliefs. It also notes that Antifa activity ranges from lawful protest and political organizing to criminal and sometimes violent conduct. (Congress.gov)

Critics from the left may argue that “Antifa” is frequently used as a broad label for anyone who opposes Donald Trump or protests conservative policies.

That concern is legitimate.

It does not mean organized violence committed by people operating under the Antifa banner should be dismissed as imaginary.

Decentralized Does Not Mean Disconnected

There is no single Antifa organization controlling every activist who uses the name.

Local groups may have different leaders, targets, tactics, and definitions of fascism. Some individuals may do little more than attend demonstrations. Others may share intelligence, identify opponents, organize transportation, distribute protective equipment, or encourage confrontations.

That loose structure makes the movement difficult to define, but not impossible to observe.

The same principle applies to many political and extremist movements. Independent cells can share symbols, strategies, propaganda, and objectives without receiving orders from a national command center.

The federal government has cited specific criminal cases involving defendants it described as Antifa cell members. In March 2026, nine North Texas defendants were convicted for conduct connected to an armed attack on the Prairieland ICE Detention Center. Charges included weapons, explosives, obstruction, material support, and attempted murder. (Department of Justice)

Those convictions do not prove that every Antifa supporter is violent.

They do prove that saying “the organization does not exist” is not a serious response to documented criminal conduct.

The Government Cannot Criminalize an Ideology

President Trump issued an executive designation describing Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization in September 2025. The administration has since used that designation to support a broader crackdown on politically motivated violence. (The White House)

The designation creates an important constitutional problem.

The United States has a statutory process for designating foreign terrorist organizations. Domestic political movements exist within a different legal environment shaped by the First Amendment, due process, federalism, and criminal law.

The Congressional Research Service previously noted that the FBI does not ordinarily designate domestic organizations as terrorist groups. It investigates criminal violence rather than ideology, and membership in an ideological movement is not itself a crime. (Congress.gov)

That distinction must remain.

Calling yourself anti-fascist is protected speech.

Criticizing police is protected speech.

Attending a protest is protected activity.

Wearing black clothing, carrying a sign, or expressing anarchist ideas does not create probable cause for arrest.

Assault, arson, explosives, stalking, threats, conspiracy, and attempted murder are crimes. Those acts should be prosecuted regardless of whether the offender claims to be Antifa, MAGA, socialist, nationalist, religious, or politically unaffiliated.

Broad Labels Invite Political Abuse

The government should identify defendants, criminal acts, evidence, financing, communications, and specific conspiracies.

It should not use “Antifa” as a substitute for proving a case.

A broad political label could eventually be expanded to include journalists, legal observers, civil-rights organizations, peaceful protesters, or anyone who embarrasses the administration.

Conservatives should understand that danger.

A power created to target the radical left today may be turned against gun owners, pro-life demonstrators, parents at school-board meetings, constitutional militias, religious activists, or government whistleblowers tomorrow.

Government power rarely remains limited to its first intended target.

Prosecute Violence, Not Political Labels

Antifa is not imaginary. It is a decentralized movement containing independent organizations, activists, and local networks.

Some people associated with it engage in lawful protest. Others have used intimidation, property destruction, weapons, and violence.

The law should distinguish between them.

The right should not pretend political violence is harmless because it comes from the left. The left should not pretend violent networks disappear because they lack a national office.

At the same time, conservatives should reject any system that allows the government to prosecute people merely for their ideology.

Investigate conduct. Follow the evidence. Identify conspirators. Prosecute violence. Protect peaceful speech.

That standard should apply to Antifa, white nationalists, radical militias, religious extremists, and every other movement.

The Constitution does not protect attempted murder.

It also does not permit the government to turn political opposition into a crime.

Antifa is a decentralized movement rather than one conventional national organization. That does not make violent cells imaginary, but criminal prosecution must remain focused on conduct and evidence rather than ideology.
