There was a time when Americans could argue hard, disagree loudly, mock politicians, challenge activists, and still understand that political violence crossed a sacred line.
That line is now getting blurred in a dangerous way.
A disturbing online controversy has erupted around reports that TikTok users were using audio tied to Charlie Kirk’s assassination in entertainment-style videos, including outfit transition clips. Turning Point USA condemned the trend as grotesque and dehumanizing, and TikTok reportedly said known videos and audio violated its policies against violent material and were being removed.
This is not just another internet outrage cycle. This is a warning sign about what happens when political hatred becomes content, tragedy becomes a trend, and human loss becomes another tool for clicks.
When Tragedy Becomes Content, What Happens to the Country?
The reported TikTok trend drew backlash because it appeared to turn real political violence into a punchline, a soundtrack, or an aesthetic device for social media engagement. Critics from multiple sides of the political world called the content disrespectful and lacking empathy.
That should bother every American, regardless of party.
This is not about whether someone agreed with Charlie Kirk. This is not about whether someone liked his politics. This is not about whether someone is conservative, liberal, Republican, Democrat, independent, libertarian, or politically homeless.
This is about whether Americans can still recognize the humanity of people they oppose.
A Constitutional Republic cannot survive on rights alone. It also requires restraint, responsibility, civic discipline, and the basic understanding that every political opponent is still a human being.
The First Amendment Protects Speech, But It Does Not Replace Character
The First Amendment protects political speech. It protects offensive speech. It protects unpopular speech. It protects speech that angers people, disturbs people, and challenges the government.
That protection matters because it is one of the foundations of American liberty.
However, constitutional awareness requires honesty. Just because speech may be protected from government punishment does not mean that every expression is morally healthy, culturally responsible, or good for the survival of a free nation.
There is a difference between censorship and accountability. There is a difference between offensive political commentary and celebrating violence. There is a difference between criticizing a public figure and turning a person’s final moments into entertainment.
This is where America must grow up again.
The government should not become the national speech police. At the same time, the people must become morally serious enough to reject a culture that rewards cruelty with attention.
Big Tech, Algorithms, and the Incentive to Dehumanize
This controversy also raises a larger question about social media platforms.
When graphic or violent material spreads online, platforms face major moderation challenges. Violent content can move quickly through social media before moderation systems catch up, and that creates a serious problem for public culture.
The algorithm does not care about dignity. The algorithm does not care about grief. The algorithm does not care about whether a republic becomes more divided, more hateful, or more unstable.
The algorithm rewards engagement. Outrage creates engagement. Mockery creates engagement. Shock creates engagement.
If Americans are not careful, the digital marketplace will teach an entire generation that cruelty is influence, dehumanization is comedy, and political violence is just another meme format.
That is not liberty. That is cultural decay.
National Impact: America Cannot Keep Playing with Fire
Nationally, this matters because the country is already living through a dangerous season of political hostility.
Threats, violent rhetoric, assassination jokes, public intimidation, and online mobs have become too common in American politics. The danger is not limited to one party or one movement.
The danger is the growing belief that violence is only wrong when it happens to your side.
That is how principles die.
If political violence against your opponent makes you laugh, then you do not believe in justice. If censorship only bothers you when your side is censored, then you do not believe in the First Amendment. If human dignity only applies to people who vote like you, then you do not believe in liberty.
You believe in power.
Power without principle is exactly what the Constitution was written to restrain.
State and Local Impact: North Carolina Should Pay Attention
This issue also matters at the state and local level, including here in North Carolina.
North Carolina has school board meetings, county commissioner meetings, town halls, college campuses, protests, rallies, courthouse debates, and public forums where people disagree passionately. That is part of self-government, and it should be protected.
Citizens should be allowed to speak. Parents should be allowed to challenge school boards. Students should be allowed to debate ideas. Activists should be allowed to assemble peacefully. Candidates should be challenged by voters. Journalists and commentators should be allowed to ask hard questions.
However, if the culture starts normalizing political violence online, eventually that poison finds its way into real communities.
It moves from national platforms into local arguments. It moves from viral jokes into public intimidation. It moves from online mobs into real-world fear.
North Carolina does not need that, and America does not need that.
A free people must be able to disagree without treating each other as targets.
Is America Laughing at Violence Because We Forgot What Liberty Requires?

The First Amendment protects us from government censorship, but it does not protect America from losing its soul. That responsibility belongs to the American people.
A Constitutional Republic requires more than courts, elections, amendments, and written rights. It requires citizens who understand that liberty comes with responsibility.
It requires people who can say, “I oppose you, but I do not want you dead.” It requires parents teaching children that politics is not a blood sport. It requires platforms that stop rewarding human cruelty as viral entertainment.
It also requires leaders who stop excusing violent rhetoric when it benefits their own side.
America can defend the First Amendment and still condemn the normalization of violence. America can oppose censorship and still say that mocking assassination is morally bankrupt. America can protect speech and still demand better from its culture.
That is not weakness. That is constitutional maturity.
The real question is not whether America still has free speech. The real question is whether America still the character has required to use that freedom wisely.
Political violence should never become a trend. Human loss should never become a punchline. Assassination should never become entertainment.
Once a society begins laughing at violence against people it dislikes, it has already started walking away from ordered liberty.
That path does not end in freedom. It ends in fear, retaliation, and a nation where people stop debating and start targeting each other.
That is not the America our Constitution was designed to protect.
The question remains whether America is protecting free speech or normalizing political violence. The answer depends on whether Americans still the courage have to defend liberty with responsibility, truth with compassion, and disagreement without dehumanization.
