Is McDonald’s Taking Away Soda Machines Because Customers Changed, or Because Trust Collapsed?

I walked into a fast-food restaurant recently and immediately noticed something felt different. At first glance, everything looked normal enough. The kiosks were glowing, and mobile pickup shelves were crowded with bags waiting for drivers. Employees rushed around, trying to manage drive-thru orders, app orders, and customers standing impatiently at the counter. But after a moment, I realized what was missing.

The self-serve soda machine was gone.

That may sound like a small thing to some people, but it actually says a lot about where our culture, our businesses, and our society are heading. For decades, the self-serve soda station was part of the normal fast-food experience in America. You bought your meal, filled your own drink, grabbed your napkins, maybe got a refill while you sat there eating, and nobody thought much about it. It was one of those small conveniences customers simply expected.

Now, more and more restaurants are quietly removing those stations and moving them behind the counter.

Why McDonald’s Says the Soda Machines Are Disappearing

McDonald’s has publicly confirmed that self-serve soda fountains are being phased out from dining rooms across the United States. The company says the move is about changing consumer habits, digital ordering, delivery growth, and creating a more consistent experience for customers, no matter how they order.

On paper, that explanation sounds clean, professional, and reasonable.

The company points out that a large percentage of sales now come from drive-thru, delivery apps, and mobile ordering instead of traditional dine-in customers. In many stores, dining rooms no longer operate the way they once did. Restaurants are being redesigned around speed, delivery logistics, and app-based convenience rather than the old dine-in experience.

That explanation is partly true.

But it is also only half the story.

The Truth Nobody Wants to Say Out Loud

The reality is that most people already know what happened at those soda fountains.

Everyone has seen the water cup that somehow came back filled with Coke. Everyone has watched people buy one small drink and refill it repeatedly. Some people walked in without buying anything at all and helped themselves anyway.

Over time, what was once considered taking advantage quietly became normalized behavior for many people.

That matters because businesses eventually respond when abuse becomes common enough. Companies may use polished corporate language like “consumer behavior trends” or “evolving customer experiences,” but underneath those carefully crafted statements is a much simpler reality.

Businesses are reacting to a culture where trust has been steadily breaking down.

The Soda Machine Is Not the Only Thing Disappearing

The soda station is just one example of a much larger trend happening across America.

Drugstores now lock up deodorant, toothpaste, and laundry detergent behind glass. Grocery stores place expensive meat behind security barriers. Gas stations require prepayment before pumping gas. Restaurants limit access to condiments, utensils, and refill stations.

Everywhere you look, businesses are slowly removing convenience and replacing it with restrictions, barriers, and control.

Why?

Because when dishonesty increases, freedom decreases.

That is one of the oldest truths in human society, and it applies just as much to everyday customer behavior as it does to government or politics.

Customers Are Doing More While Paying More

At the same time, businesses are not completely innocent in this situation either.

Corporations have spent years cutting labor costs, automating customer interaction, shrinking portions, and raising prices while expecting customers to simply accept it all without frustration.

Fast-food restaurants increasingly want customers to do more work themselves. Customers are expected to use kiosks, order through apps, input their own customizations, wait for pickup numbers, clear their own tables, and navigate increasingly impersonal systems.

The experience that used to feel simple and convenient now often feels cold and transactional.

And people notice that.

There was a time when fast food genuinely felt affordable for working Americans. A value menu actually offered value. Double cheeseburgers were cheap enough for almost anyone to grab a quick meal without thinking twice about it. Families could feed their kids at McDonald’s without it feeling like a financial decision.

Now, many customers walk into McDonald’s and realize they could spend nearly the same amount of money at a sit-down restaurant. In some cases, people can go somewhere like Red Robin, get unlimited fries, actual table service, free refills, and a more relaxed experience for only slightly more money than a fast-food combo meal.

That is why many Americans are beginning to ask an uncomfortable question.

If customers are doing more of the work, why are they also paying significantly more money?

The Bigger Problem Is the Collapse of Trust

This conversation is ultimately about much more than soda refills.

It is about the slow erosion of trust in American culture.

A free society only functions properly when people can still trust one another to follow basic rules and behave responsibly. Businesses need customers to act honestly. Customers need businesses to provide fair value.

Once both sides stop trusting each other, society slowly transforms into something colder, more restrictive, and more controlled.

That transformation happens gradually.

More locks appear.

More cameras go up.

More restrictions are added.

More systems become automated.

Human interaction decreases.

Convenience disappears.

And honest people end up dealing with the consequences created by dishonest people.

That is what frustrates so many Americans today. The honest customer who simply wanted a refill loses the convenience because too many others have abused it. The honest shopper has to wait for an employee to unlock the toothpaste because theft has become widespread.

Responsible people lose freedom because irresponsible behavior has become normalized.

Are We Losing Convenience Because America Lost Responsibility?

The Go Right with Peter Boykin, the Constitutionalist for Liberty Perspective

This is where the conversation becomes uncomfortable for everyone involved.

Americans love talking about freedom, but freedom only survives when people are responsible enough to handle it. That applies in government, culture, business, and everyday life.

A Constitutional Republic depends on people being capable of handling freedom responsibly.

When people abuse open systems, restrictions eventually replace them. When dishonesty becomes normalized, trust disappears. When trust disappears, convenience and freedom disappear with it.

At the same time, corporations should stop pretending customers do not notice the constant reduction in service, value, and human interaction. Customers are not blind. People can see when businesses cut perks, reduce convenience, raise prices, and still market the experience as “improved.”

The truth is, neither side is completely innocent.

Customers should not justify dishonesty simply because a corporation is large or profitable. Businesses should not expect endless loyalty while continuously reducing value for consumers.

A healthy free-market system requires responsibility and fairness from both sides.

Because once trust collapses, everything moves behind the counter.

Not just the soda machines.

Potentially freedom itself.
