Cheap Fuel Cannot Come at the Cost of American Leverage

Russia Has Diesel. America Has a Decision to Make.

President Trump announced that Russia will supply more than 300,000 metric tons of diesel to U.S. and global markets, followed by additional shipments in November and beyond. Washington temporarily eased sanctions restrictions to permit the transactions as high diesel prices put pressure on consumers and businesses.

Ukraine’s government argues the arrangement gives Moscow additional revenue while its war continues.

The question is bigger than whether a shipment of diesel can shave a few cents off fuel prices. It is whether short-term relief strengthens America’s long-term energy position or trades one vulnerability for another.

 

 

Energy Independence Means More Than a Cheaper Pump

Diesel moves America’s economy.

It powers trucks, farms, construction equipment and supply chains. When diesel becomes expensive, the costs eventually reach grocery stores, businesses and working families.

Americans need relief.

But the question is whether buying Russian diesel provides lasting relief or simply creates another dependency.

I support American energy independence.

That means producing more oil and natural gas, expanding refining capacity, modernizing infrastructure and investing in nuclear power alongside other reliable energy sources.

Temporary foreign supplies may help stabilize a market. They should never replace a long-term American energy strategy.

And Putin should not receive a blank check.

If Washington relaxes sanctions to obtain additional fuel, Americans deserve transparency about the financial benefits Russia receives and whether the arrangement affects our leverage in negotiations over Ukraine.

Peace through strength requires both strength and a realistic path toward peace.

Government power needs guardrails regardless of which party holds the keys.

 

Cheap Today Cannot Mean Dependent Tomorrow

Cheap diesel can provide temporary relief. It cannot become America’s long-term energy plan.

Produce more here. Refine more here. Build reliable energy infrastructure here.

Energy independence is not a slogan if dependence simply changes suppliers.
