Criminal networks operating in New York City have been exposed on camera, engaging in the illicit trade of counterfeit identification documents for illegal immigrants.
In-depth Look: A recent investigation by The NY Post revealed the presence of approximately ten individuals strategically positioned on street corners throughout Queens, NYC, actively vending forged legal documents. The fraudulent items include Social Security cards and green cards, available at prices ranging from $70 to $250.
Perpetrators’ Identity: Law enforcement authorities identified the sellers as individuals with criminal affiliations, linking them to notorious gangs like MS-13 and the 18th Street Gang.
Brazen Statements: During an interaction with an undercover NY Post reporter, one gang member confidently asserted, “They work,” while demonstrating a sample of the counterfeit documents on his smartphone. He further explained the process, stating, “I need your name, your whole name, your age… I can take your picture.”
Citywide Impact: New York City has witnessed an influx of around 180,000 illegal immigrants since the spring of 2022. The primary motive for obtaining these fake IDs is often to secure employment without facing scrutiny from employers who might verify documents rigorously.
National Security Concerns: Bruce Foucart, a former Homeland Security investigations chief, highlighted the potential dangers associated with the use of fake IDs. He warned that terrorists could exploit the situation by loading vehicles with explosives and perpetrating major, disastrous events like targeting infrastructure such as the Holland Tunnel.
Ongoing Threat: With instances like 169 individuals on the Terrorism Watch List being apprehended while attempting to enter the country through the southern border in fiscal year 2023, concerns linger about the unknown number of individuals who might have gone undetected.
