The following day, another American service member was killed in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance recovered from a downed Iranian attack drone. Another service member received a minor injury. Military personnel also recovered unidentified remains from the Jordan attack site, but CENTCOM said the examination needed to confirm their identity remained underway. (Central Command)

That means the official accounting from these two incidents currently stands at three confirmed deaths, one missing service member, and unidentified remains awaiting verification.

The tragedy should not be compressed into another political argument about who looks stronger on television.

Operation Epic Fury Is Becoming a War

U.S. Central Command describes Operation Epic Fury as a campaign to dismantle the Iranian regime’s security apparatus and strike locations posing an imminent threat. The White House has presented broader objectives that include destroying Iran’s naval capabilities, weakening its regional proxies, and preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Those are enormous objectives.

They extend far beyond retaliating against one missile battery or disabling a drone-launching site. Dismantling a government’s security structure, neutralizing its navy, suppressing its proxies, and permanently blocking a nuclear program would require sustained military, diplomatic, intelligence, and economic commitments.

Reuters reports that 17 American service members have now been killed during the broader conflict and that hundreds have been injured. President Donald Trump has promised that Iran will pay many times over for American deaths as the United States continues striking Iranian targets. (Reuters)

Iran must not be allowed to kill American troops without consequences. But retaliation alone does not answer the question that matters most:

What outcome is the United States trying to achieve?

Congress Cannot Remain a Spectator

The Constitution divides war powers between the executive and legislative branches. The president serves as commander in chief, while Congress possesses the power to declare war and authorize more limited uses of military force. The War Powers Resolution also establishes reporting and withdrawal requirements when forces enter sustained hostilities without specific congressional authorization. (Congress.gov)

Presidents need the ability to defend American forces from an immediate attack.

A prolonged campaign with naval blockades, repeated strikes, mounting casualties, regional retaliation, and ambitious objectives cannot remain indefinitely outside a serious congressional debate.

Members of Congress should be required to vote on the mission they are funding.

They should state whether they support it, define its legal authorization, establish reporting requirements, and demand measurable conditions for concluding military operations.

Vengeance Is Not a Strategy

American forces have every right to defend themselves. Iran should face overwhelming consequences when it deliberately attacks American personnel.

But promises to avenge every death “a hundred times over” reduce human lives to an arithmetic exercise.

Four hundred Iranian deaths would not bring back four Americans. A larger body count would not automatically make the United States safer, prevent Iran from rebuilding, or produce a durable peace.

The administration owes the public more than declarations of vengeance.

What is the mission?

What is the constitutional authorization?

What would victory look like?

What happens if Iran continues attacking American bases after another month of strikes?

What diplomatic settlement would the United States accept?

Supporting the troops means more than cheering when missiles launch. It means refusing to send Americans into an expanding conflict without a defined purpose and an achievable end state.

Strength is necessary.

Strategy is indispensable.

Three American service members have been confirmed dead in Iranian attacks and related operations, while another remains missing. The administration must explain the mission, legal authority, and path toward ending the conflict.
