The Smart Wall May Secure the Border,

But Who Watches the Watchers?

The Wall Is Becoming a Machine

The border wall is no longer only a wall.

It is becoming steel, sensors, cameras, towers, artificial intelligence, and surveillance technology.

For supporters, that sounds like modern border security. For constitutional conservatives, it should also raise a serious question.

When government surveillance expands, who makes sure it does not go too far?

The Trump administration is moving forward with a major “smart wall” strategy at the southern border. The Associated Press reports that the plan combines physical barriers with technology such as sensors, cameras, towers, and advanced surveillance systems. The effort is part of a larger $46 billion border wall plan.

Supporters argue that this is the next step in border enforcement. Physical wall can be used where it works. Technology can be used where terrain makes construction difficult. Agents can be deployed more efficiently. Instead of relying only on manpower or only on fencing, the federal government is building a system that watches, tracks, alerts, and responds.

There is logic to that.

America should use modern tools to defend sovereignty and enforce immigration law. Border Patrol agents should have the equipment they need. The federal government should not pretend that 20th century solutions alone can solve 21st century problems.

But conservatives should not become careless about surveillance simply because the word “border” is attached to it.

Technology is never neutral once government controls it. Sensors collect information. Cameras create records. Towers watch communities. Artificial intelligence sorts, flags, and interprets data. That may help enforcement, but it also creates new risks.

Where is the data stored? Who can access it? How long is it kept? How is it audited? What happens when technology fails? What protections exist for citizens, landowners, and border communities?

These are not left-wing questions.

These are constitutional questions.

A smart wall may help secure the border, but smart technology without smart oversight can become another form of government overreach.

Smart Walls Need Smarter Oversight

The Go Right with Peter Boykin Perspective

Border security and civil liberty should not be treated as enemies.

A serious country can enforce its laws and still respect constitutional limits.

Conservatives who oppose censorship, warrantless spying, government overreach, and weaponized agencies should stay consistent when surveillance expands at the border.

The smart wall may be useful. It may help agents respond faster, cover more ground, and reduce illegal crossings.

But useful does not automatically mean harmless.

Every government tool needs boundaries. Every surveillance system needs accountability. Every agency using taxpayer money needs oversight.

Secure the border, but do not build a system that forgets liberty.

Smart government needs accountability too.

The Trump administration’s smart wall strategy combines border barriers with cameras, sensors, towers, and surveillance technology. Peter Boykin argues that modern border security must still respect privacy, property rights, and constitutional limits.
